Waitangi Day celebrations in Coomera
Kia Ora tatau (hello everyone!)
This Saturday, Feb 6th is New Zealand’s Waitangi Day. Waitangi Day is New zealand’s national day as it marks the anniversary of the initial signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6, 1840. This treaty is the regarded as the founding document of the nation.
The treaty was signed by representatives acting on behalf of the British Crown and about 45 Māori chiefs. Over the course of the next seven months, copies of the treaty were toured around the country to give other chiefs the opportunity to sign. The signing had the effect of securing British sovereignty over the islands of New Zealand, which was officially proclaimed on May 21, 1840 (cited from ‘Creating the Treaty of Waitangi’).
Westfield Coomera is hosting Waitangi Day Celebrations this Saturday. Visit the Westfield website for more information.
Fun fact, Kumera (pronounced like Coomera but roll the r) actually means sweet potato in Maori.
