A world of wonders in Year 3

On Monday, 34WH received a visit from Valerie's mum.  She came in to teach us about Chinese New Year as part of our HASS unit.  It was amazing. The children had so many fantastic questions.  Her mum taught us about the zodiac, Hong Kong, traditional clothing, food and dragon dancing.  She even had us make Ox envelopes. Such an awesome learning experience. Mrs Hardwick and Miss Wolbers are still excited with what they have learned too.

Then on Tuesday,  Harlan’s mum came in and taught us about the Swiss celebration called Fasnacht.  This is a carnival that happens every year to start off the winter season and to scare off the ghosts or their dark winter using loud music, delicious food, confetti and colourful costumes. We tried a Schenkeli which is a crunchy donut type food. It was an another fantastic learning experience.

And to finish our week off we had Mr Ken come in to teach our class all about the Highland Games and Burns day. He wore his kilt and even read to us in Scottish.  We learned about Nessie and haggis.  It was a very special treat especially for the teachers.

6EL's 'Cyclone in a Bottle'

In this science lesson, students in Year 6EL needed to identify the similarities and differences between the formation and features of cyclones and a simulated 'cyclone in a bottle'. Our young scientists discovered the best way to make a vortex inside a bottle was to rotate the bottle in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.
