Playing alongside high schoolers

Over the school holidays, Ashtiva undertook her Grade 2 AMEB exam for violin.  This entailed general knowledge questions, aural questions, and playing several pieces of music: Theme from Witches Dance, Chiquilín de Bachín, Wild West, Still Reeling, and a couple of others. She has been practicing the songs since January, and was very nervous when she saw the very big high school students sitting next to her!

Aussie champ

Lyla in 4W accomplished a great achievement over the school holidays. Lyla competes in artistic roller skating and trains very hard on 3 days each week for 3-4 hours each day.

She became the Queensland state champion earlier in the year and was nominated to skate at the Australian National Competition. The Nationals were held over the holidays and Lyla skated so well in her 3 events representing Queensland.  She is now an Australian Champion!

Lyla’s amazing results include:

  • Primary Girls free dance (GOLD medal and Australian champion)
  • Primary Girls Solo dance (SILVER)
  • Primary Girls figures (SILVER)

From school to academy

Congratulations to Cruz on his invitation to the National Tennis Academy.  He attends the academy each week and is working hard on developing his game.

He was also invited to represent the invitational team for South Coast in Cairns in
August.  This makes him in the Top 8 tennis players for his age on the South Coast region.  Wow!

Australian championship

Amy recently competed at the National Table Tennis Championships held on the Sunshine Coast in early July.  She won:

  • silver in the Under-11 team event
  • bronze medal in the Under-11 doubles event.

She also lost just one game and won all of her team matches, reached #3 on the national table tennis rankings for her age group.  And we are also very proud to announce that Amy was selected as a member of the National Squad.  Congratulations Amy!

Every day heroes

Over the first 6 weeks of this term, 6WC and 6K are inviting different 'characters' (everyday heroes/ members of our community), to come in and share their journey and how they overcome challenging moments in their life. These visits are preparing students for their writing task for the term where the assessment is asking students to write a character analysis.

The classes have now welcomed Miss King (in week 1) in to talk about her Diabetes journey and parent of school, Nicola Danielson (in week 2) in to talk about her sight and hearing loss. These two ladies have kick-started these sessions with enormous success and the students and teachers cannot wait to welcome 4 more in the coming weeks. The year 6 students proved a level of maturity, empathy and engagement far beyond their years with both the respect and questioning during both talks. One of the best parts, following the talk, was sharing the character traits that the students believed matched the guests then seeing happy tears well up in the eyes of those special guests.
