OSHC News - National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Day
Thursday the 4th of August, was National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Day! It’s a celebration of the strength and culture of indigenous children in our community. To celebrate, we chose a craft activity that would celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The children had the option to colour in a rainbow serpent or create their own boomerang. The boomerang papers also had a section describing different Aboriginal drawings and their meanings, and the children could include these in their design This was a fun new way to gain meaning from a language that they are not typically exposed to, and to create their own story. Some of the children even mentioned that they had learned things like this in school, and they felt excited to have knowledge they could apply to their drawing.
