Principal's news
Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
I hope that everyone is well and that the past week has been a successful one.

The senior band was sounding awesome at rehearsal this week with Mr Owens conducting and Mrs Ellison supporting.
What is in our sights this year?
Our aspiration for every student is to be
Good at learning - Good at life
To achieve this in 2023, we will be focused on:
Reading
- We are focused on all students developing a deep love of reading and being successful in learning to read and comprehend texts.
- We need families to read at home - a lot!
Deep learning
- We will be further developing character, citizenship and collaboration skills for all learners.
- We need all students to attend school as a strong routine. Our target is 95% attendance. We need families to create strong school routines across each week and each day.
Does strong attendance make any difference?
Strong attendance leads to optimum learning outcomes and lower anxiety for children and stronger partnerships between parents and teachers - it is as simple as that.
NAPLAN is next week
Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting the annual NAPLAN tests this week with some catch up opportunities being completed until next Tuesday. Children will complete the tests as part of their daily routine although very strict testing conditions are maintained. Please contact your child's teacher if you have questions.
You can help your children by telling your them to:
- Do their best with each test and show persistence and determination.
- Go to bed early and get a great night's sleep each night
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Be extra-organised for the days of the testing and arrive at school early or on-time
Kokoda training
The first training session for the school's Kokoda Challenge was completed last Saturday at Burleigh Heads. It was a spectacular sunrise and the children trained hard with their teachers and parents. Our next training session is at Nerang State Forest on Saturday where we experience trail running for the first time this year.

School hats for playtime
I have been a little quiet around the school the past week and those who have seen me will know why. Removing melanoma is not pleasant and is avoidable. I just needed to wear a hat more as a child and young adult. Please make sure your child is safe.
Kind regards
Vic
