Celebrations of Learning
Prep
This week Prep have started their swimming at Rackley’s Pimpama. The focus of Prep swimming is to help children progress from basic water safety to mastering swimming strokes. It is very rewarding to see students’ confidence and abilities grow over the program. We are going to have some very tired little bodies after a big week.
In Prep D, we wrote a letter to Santa convincing him to send us an elf and the reasons why this would be good idea. The excitement is building as our classrooms are beginning to look a lot like Christmas and less like fairytales.
All the Prep classes are hard at work preparing for the Christmas concert and we are getting very excited to showcase our dance moves and beautiful voices for you all to see.
Year 1
1-2B integrated their learning this fortnight of procedure writing (Year 1) and money (year 2) during our weekly math rotations. We set up an ice-cream shop as part of a play experience, where students took turns to role play shop keepers and customers and made ice-cream sundaes. They read the price list, placed their order, counted their money and gave change as they engaged in their learning. Students developed their listening and following direction skills as they communicated respectfully. The following day, the teachers set up a real-life ice-cream sundae stand, where students ordered their sundae and observed the steps. Following this, our year 1 friends wrote a procedure text to make an ice-cream sundae. Our Year 2 friends wrote a persuasive text to persuade their families to have anything they wanted for dinner! I was pleased to hear some of the students’ writing was so convincing they got what they wanted… Even if it meant having to do the dishes!

Year 2
In 2D, we've been focusing on writing persuasive letters, and the students have really enjoyed the challenge of convincing their readers with strong opinions and supporting reasons. To help improve our writing, we've been using our "Bump It Up" wall, which clearly shows the steps for raising the quality of our work. The students love how it helps them see exactly what they need to do to improve their writing, and it's been exciting to watch them engage with the process as they strive to meet higher standards in their persuasive letters. Each week, we’ve also chosen a VIP writer, whose work the class peers assess to give feedback and suggestions on how to “bump it up.” This peer assessment activity has encouraged students to apply what they’ve learned from the Bump It Up wall, giving them valuable practice in both evaluating writing and improving their own.
