Year 3 Excursion to Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre
This week, our Year 3 students had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre, where they immersed themselves in learning about the rich traditions and practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Throughout the day, students took part in a wide range of engaging hands-on experiences. They played traditional games, learning how these activities were not only fun but also important in teaching skills needed for daily life. Many students were especially excited to try their hand at throwing boomerangs, discovering the technique and precision required.
Art was another highlight of the day. Students experimented with dot painting, creating their own colourful designs, and experienced having traditional ochre painted on their faces or arms. This gave them a greater appreciation of the cultural and ceremonial significance of these practices.
The visit also provided opportunities to listen and reflect. Students heard fascinating stories about Aboriginal traditions and what life was like in the past, while also learning how culture and customs continue to remain strong and important today. They listened to the deep, resonant sounds of the didgeridoo and joined in a traditional dance that told the story of the Rainbow Serpent, one of the most significant figures in Aboriginal Dreaming.
The excursion was a meaningful and memorable experience for all, helping our students to deepen their understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. We are grateful to the Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre for welcoming us so warmly and providing such an enriching day of learning.
