- A very Pimpama Bunnings Christmas!
Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Wow! What a week. The continual rain this week has really left us drenched and hoping for a couple of days to dry out. Wet lunches are never fun for kids or staff, but we just get on with managing them.
The oval area is saturated but, with a break in the weather, we are hoping to be able to run the Slime Spectacular this week. We have a third back up day as well - just in case but we are at the mercy of the weather at the moment. We will keep families informed of plans and re-plans as we need to make them.
The highlight of this week was the Year 6 celebration dinner. It was a lot of fun for the students who were able to dress up and have dinner with their friends and teachers. The photographer will have the photos ready for us soon and I will be able to share some next week.
Our prep classes began their swimming program and they really enjoyed the opportunities. Thank you to our staff for doing such a great job with this.

COVID plans for 2022
The Queensland borders are re-opening in the coming weeks, and the likelihood of COVID entering the Gold Coast increases. The days of widespread lock downs have passed replaced by localised quarantines. It is possible that a quarantine could affect our school and community so we need to have some very flexible plans organised now - just in case.
We are currently working on our remote learning programs for 2022. We will send out more information in the coming fortnight so that all families will be able to access them on their devices and home computers.
And now the weather
The weather might just cause us a few headaches across the final 10 days of school. We have our activities very well planned but COVID restrictions combined with inclement weather might see a couple of last minute changes. For example, we can only hold 400 people (students, staff and parents) in the hall due to the meterage restrictions. As a result, we will conduct our end of year events for Prep to Year 4 in the Cafe covered area. Outdoors means no limitations other than social distancing. If it is raining on the day of these events we will head to the hall but the times for the groups will change to allow parents to attend. Please stay flexible with us.
Kind regards
Vic

- We also suggest a spare pair of socks and undies to change back into after the fun.

- Students will NOT be permitted to participate in their school uniform.
- If you are attending the event as a spectator, you must sign in via the Check in QLD app.
- The approximate time of each year levels attendance at the event can be found below.

Thank you sincerely for your support of the Slime Spectacular

2022 is closing in quickly so it is time to begin your preparations.
What are your 2022 plans?
If you looking to relocate in 2022 and your children will not be returning to Coomera Rivers, please let our office staff know. This really assists us in creating our 2022 class structures.
Book lists for 2022
The book lists for next year are now ready. We no longer have a school sourced supplier. This decision was made at the P&C following considerable consultation and discussion. Instead, families can:
- Print the list
- Identify the items they need and what they already have from this year, then
- Head off to the back to school sales.

Alliance schools debating competition
Grand Finals - here we come!
On Wednesday evening, nine debating teams from our neighbouring schools braved the weather to compete in the final round of debates for the 2021 Coomera Alliance Debating Competition. Each team was competing for a place in the grand final which is set to take place next week. Our Year 4 teams were debating the topic that brothers are better than sisters while our Year 5 teams challenged the idea that honesty is the best policy. We also had two Year 6 teams arguing that ‘Reality TV is harmful to society’. This was the Team B’s 2nd debate in the competition and the improvement was evident. Our debaters have really shown a lot of growth in not only their public speaking skills but also their ability to think on the spot and rebut the oppositions arguments.
Keeping with tradition, Coomera Rivers students and their coaches have once again excelled in this competition with all three year levels making it to the grand final. Both our Year 4 and 5 team remain undefeated which is amazing. We wish all our teams the best of luck next week as they take on the following topics:
Year 4
Topic: A teacher’s job is the most important job in the world
Coomera Rivers vs Coomera State
Coomera Rivers - Negative
Year 5
Topic: It is better to be smart than funny
Coomera Rivers vs Coomera Springs
Coomera Rivers: Affirmative
Year 6
Topic: Life is easy when you’re beautiful
Coomera Rivers vs Picnic Creek
Coomera Rivers: Affirmative
Watch this space to find out the results next week, although, in our eyes, our students are already winners!

Global innovators REALLY impress
The final Global Innovators Trade Show & Pitch Event for Year 5 students was another successful showcase of learning this week when students displayed their passions and design solutions for the Global Goals. After the buzz of the trade show, six teams were selected by their teachers to pitch to the panel of experts from our local community.
Five experts (sharks) including teachers from Pimpama State Secondary College and lecturers from TAFE Coomera and Central Queensland University gave the students feedback on their pitch presentations.
An additional exciting outcome from the event was a proposal from the Head of Business/Enterprise at Pimpama State Secondary College for one of the teams to collaborate with senior fashion students in 2022 to create the scrunchies for selling and raising money for the very personal (for one of our students) and important cause of IBD - Inflammatory Bowel Disease. A parent in attendance has offered to sell the scrunchies on his website and this means this team will be able to proceed with their idea to campaign and raise money for the hospitals treating IBD patients.
Congratulations to the teams who made it through to the Pitch Event including The Veggie Warriors, Guardians of the Ocean, IBD Warriors, The Wildlife Hero, Raising Awareness and Ocean Officers. The winner on the day was The Wildlife Hero. Ceda's idea to create a Koala sanctuary and promote the financial adoption of Koala's in need was the one the sharks believed to be the best on the day.

Run run as fast as you can
The last fairy tale to learn about in Prep S this term was The Gingerbread Man. We spent a whole morning doing Gingerbread Man activities - write the room, playdough, story sequencing, puppet retell and Gingerbread Man cookie decorating.
It was great learning fun.

Year 4 Dancers Perform For ARCARE Residents
This week, Year 4 dancers, selected by Mrs Blyth, gave a fantastic performance for the residents of the ARCARE Aged Care Facility in Pimpama. This was an exciting opportunity for our students to have an authentic purpose for choreographing and performing their dance routines. Coomera Rivers has established a community partnership with ARCARE this semester, which is providing students with genuine, real world, Citizenship experiences. The clapping along and happy smiles in the audience, confirmed that the residents absolutely loved the performance. Well done and thank you to Mrs Blyth and our fabulous Year 4 students.

Is Mr Meijboom busy?
2H students setup reindeers in Mr Meijboom’s office to check on what he does through the day. Students had to write about what the reindeers saw him do. Baylin guessed that Mr Meijboom was eating cookies and Taylor guessed that he was having a party with Santa and the reindeers. I guess only the reindeers truly know what Mr Meijboom does through the day.
Deadly Choices Finishes For the Year
Our Year 3 and 4 students were excited to receive their end of program jerseys and certificates at our last Deadly Choices lesson for the year. This term they have learned healthy eating habits and have shown their budding chef skills along the way.
A big thank you to program facilitaor Josh for inspiring the students to take on healthy habits and make deadly choices.
Local touch football success
Congratulations to these young players in the Coomera touch competition. They finished second on the ladder but lost in the semi final.
Amazingly, the kids had never played before and are absolutely chomping at the bit to join the school team next year.
And its back to the pool
Congratulations to Cooper on his selection to the Gold Coast regional team for the relay championships in December. This is a HUGE achievement given he was competing against 165 very talented swimmers. Well done Cooper.

2022 Instrumental Music Offers
This week, students who have been selected for next year’s strings and band programs received their official offer. Forms need to be returned by the due date otherwise the position will go to the next person on the waiting list.
If you believe your child has missed out on a place, or have further questions, please email Mrs Zander.
