Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Term 3 is steaming ahead and the learning and opportunities at Coomera Rivers continue to be impressive. Our chess teams did very well at the regional tournament on Wednesday and our Year 5&6 Matheltics Live challenge was run and won. And finally, the hottest three spots on any team were finalised. The eSports Mario Cart Tournament is being held next Friday and the competition for the team was red hot! All of these stories are included in this issue.
Our annual Prep Pirate Day to celebrate Father's Day was a great success on Friday. Well done to the Prep team who organised this so well. It was a wonderful morning.
Last week I mentioned that the Australian Council of Educational Leaders had announced that Mrs Pinnington was awarded the 2019 Keith Tronc Awards for outstanding teacher leadership. It was lovely to hear the congratulations she received from colleagues and students this week. She is a very deserving winner.
Continuing the theme of recognition, I was informed this week that two of our teachers were shortlisted for the Queensland College of Teachers annual awards called TeachX. Congratulations to:
- Nikki Muller
- Caitlyn King
I am delighted that they have been recognised for both their commitment and teaching talent. Well done ladies.
And finally this week, I hope all of our awesome dads and granddads have a fantastic Father's Day on Sunday.
Kind regards
Vic
Week 7 Student Excellence Awards
Congratulations to the following students who earned a Student Excellence Award this week. We love acknowledging students who really step up to acheive excellence.

Serves her community
Georgie visited the Heart Foundation in Brisbane to deliver her donation. She was privileged enough to meet with the CEO of Queensland and tell him all about $20 Boss. He was most impressed with the entrepreneurial purpose and business acumen at such a young age. He was also extremely grateful for such a donation.
You can also donate to the Heart Foundation. Click here to visit their website.

The $20 Boss project
The entrepreneurial project called $20 Boss was the brainchild of Mrs Pinnington and Ms Parker. They supported 20 young entrepreneurs to create a small business venture with very little start up capital ($20 - hence the name) and generate money for charities. I know that the families were completely behind their kids and this was evidenced by the activity at the Community Fair recently. The group has since been invited to the Coomera Community Fair on Saturday 12 October. Good luck everyone!
Each week leading up to Book Week, we are hiding a super hero character somewhere in our newsletter. When you find it, be sure to email Mrs Artz with your children’s names and class to go into the draw to win a slushie for each child attending CRSS. Entries close each Tuesday at 4:00pm. Each entry also buys you a raffle ticket into the major prize of a $25 Book Fair voucher! Happy hunting!
This week's character is Captain America and he is very well hidden in the newsletter somewhere. Good luck!
Last issue we needed to hunt for Harry Potter. The winners were:

Thank you to the dads and granddads who were able to attend the annual pirate day to celebrate Father's Day. The dads really got into the theme this year and their costumes were outstanding. I am sure that loved their morning with their children as they enjoyed face painting, balloon games, digging for treasure, craft beards and eye patches, reading, card making and so much more. Well done to the Prep staff on a wonderfully coordinated event. It is certain to have created some great memories.

At regional chess tournament
Congratulations to our school chess teams at the regional carnival on Wednesday. The regional carnival is enormous with over 900 students from prep to Year 12 competing. Of these, Coomera Rivers had 16 members of chess club represent our school (from Prep to Year 6). They earned:
- 3rd place in Division C
- 2nd place in Division F
- Multiple students earned merit awards for winning 5 or more matches from the 7 rounds.
I am tremendously impressed and proud with how the teams represented our school. Awesome work everyone! Thank you sincerely to Mrs Hardwick, Miss Nic and Mrs McMurtrie on coordinating a great chess day.

Qld Schools eSports Tournament
Excitement was in the air on Thursday with the final session of our in-house eSports Tournament. The field of 30 Year 6 students was shortlisted to 14 this week. On Thursday afternoon they came together to hit the road racing in Mario Kart Deluxe 8. Three students will be selected to represent Coomera Rivers State School at the Qld Schools eSports League Tournament next Friday. The event hosted by St Hilda's is sure to be a great experience for our students as they battle it out against representatives from 14 other Queensland Schools. Congratulations to all those who participated. It has been wonderful to see their perseverance, tenacity, and sportsmanship being strengthened all whist having fun.
Year 5 will be the next lucky recipient of Woolies Breakfast to be held on Wednesday 11 September.
We are beginning the recruitment process for Instrumental Music 2020. Students currently in Year 2 are invited to participate if they are interested in learning a string instrument, while students currently in Year 3 can participate if they are interested in learning a band instrument. Following the mini-recruitment concerts which are being held next week, every child in Year 2 and Year 3 will be bringing home an expression of interest form. All students need to return the EOI form even if they are not interested in learning a strings or band instrument. An information session for parents will be held on Thursday, 5 September in the Music Centre at 3:30pm. If you wish to attend the information session or have any questions about the process, please email Cassi Zander .
Week 7 has been our week to shine. At OSHC we take time each day to celebrate everyone who comes to our service. We recognise the diversity of our students and aim to cater to their individual needs. This week, students have begun to embrace everyone’s differences too. Some examples of these are the different foods we like to eat, the different games we like to play and the different experiences we have at home and at school. Not only have our students shown acceptance, but, celebration too. Many children have started to enjoy chess after one of our students showed them how to play and even chose to do this instead of sport in the afternoon. Some of the students have found a new favourite food after trying something their friend loves. Other students have blown us away with their celebration for difference. They have started to pick up on student’s individual needs and will assist where possible by including them, explaining something to them or, comforting them. We are so proud of the special bonds our students create at OSHC.

Managing Accounts with Family Sharing
Many years ago Apple recommended that children under the age of 18 use their parents' Apple IDs to buy and download music, movies, apps, and books. This meant that the purchases the child made would be tied to their parents' account and couldn't be transferred to their own Apple ID later. That changed when Apple introduced the ability for parents to create Apple IDs for their children. These separate accounts allow kids to download content while parents monitor and control that activity.
Through Family Sharing the Ask to Buy feature is enabled by default. With Ask to Buy and Family Sharing, whenever a child initiates a new purchase or free download, a request goes to the family organiser. The organiser can review the item and approve the purchase or decline the request right from their own iPhone or iPad, or even on the childs device itself using a password.
If the family organiser approves the purchase, the content downloads automatically to their family member’s device. If they decline, no purchase or download will take place.
Creating an Apple ID for your child also allows their device to be separate from other family members devices. Content, messages, photos etc won't be synced to each device as what happens sometimes when students are signed in with a parents or siblings Apple ID.
