Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Week 4 - Tick! And it was filled with so much that makes our community and school special.
Staff Appreciation Day
Thank you to the students and families who thanked the school staff this week. I am grateful for your kindness. The staff at Coomera Rivers contribute so much to the lives and learning of our children and I am very appreciative of not only what they do, but also how they get it done.
Thank you to our P&C for acknowledging the staff again this year. It is nice to be noticed but very fulfilling to be appreciated.

Free dress day
Each year on the last Friday of October we hold a free dress day to support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. This group focuses on keeping students safe and we show our support by fund raising for them. This year we raised over $800 to donate from our RED day. Well done Coomera Rivers.

Spooky Disco
Our Spooky Disco was held tonight and it was great to see the students really enjoying the event. Congratulations to the mums behind the costumes. You constantly amaze me with your ingenuity. Thank you to the P&C for once again creating this opportunity for us and to the P&C, volunteers and staff who supervised and helped. And great job once again to DJ Brett for providing a truly professional mix.

Help in the Kiss n Go
Each afternoon, school staff are deployed to assist children get safely to the parents, onto the school buses and to begin to safely make their way home. It is extremely busy for about 20 minutes while over 1100 people make their way out of the school. And this is where the school needs your help.
Please ALWAYS:
- Allow plenty of time to collect your children
- Follow the directions of the kiss n Go staff as they continue to call cars to the front of the Kiss n Go area.
- Be courteous to your fellow school families. One extra car ahead of you will make no difference to the time you get home.
- Insist that your children keep safe habits and routines - wear seatbelts in cars, helmets for bike riding, no scooters, use the appropriate crossings.
Please NEVER:
- Abuse staff because they have called you to move forward in the Kiss n Go line. They know how the traffic works best in this space, and how to keep things moving for EVERYONE. Your children are always able to walk the extra 20m to your car.
School calendar
The Department of Education this week informed schools of some changes to risk assessment levels for various activities, particularly swimming and water-based activities. The outcome is that we will need to make minor adjustments to our swimming carnival and some wider changes to the Year 6 celebration excursion to Wet n Wild. Our school will always place student safety at the forefront of what we do, and any changes to our activities will only improve this further.
Please check the calendar regularly as events can change due to clash of commitments, weather and other factors.
Leaving in 2022?
We are beginning to complete our plans for the start of 2023. If you are leaving Coomera Rivers, please let our school office know as soon as possible so that we can make preparations.
Kind regards
Vic

REACH Program - Coomera Rivers students shine on stage
For a number of days throughout the year, Year 5 students who show an aptitude in the Performing Arts area, were invited to participate in a short extension program with Pimpama State Secondary College's Aspiring Performers Academy teachers. This was also an opportunity for our students to work alongside high school students and industry professionals from ROCK IT production. As a culmination of the program, students performed at the college's Arts Gala evening where they were also able to see the talent and opportunities that exist within the school. Our students really shone onstage and did exceptionally well given they only had one day out of each term to learn their dance. Congratulations to all our performers and a massive thank you to Pimpama SSC for providing our students with this opportunity.

Pride
Congratulations to Caleb for representing the south Queensland Māori League football club when he played in the league carnival last weekend. In the very wet conditions he scored a try and performed the Haka on a number of occasions. His mum and dad are so proud of him, and loved seeing him embrace some of his culture.

Share the Dignity
Throughout this semester, our Year 5 students have been collecting essential sanitary products to donate to the 'Share the Dignity' organisation. This charity is committed to helping vulnerable women in our community who may be homeless, fleeing domestic violence situations or just doing it tough. Our Year 5's are now looking to 'bag' the donations so they can complete their 'It's in the bag drive'. Can you help? All donations can be handed in at the office where it will then be passed on to the Year 5 team.
Eureka! Year 5 join the Gold Rush!
Our Year 5's stepped back in time to 1854, the time of the Australian Gold Rush. Set in thick bushland students experienced what life was like in a gold field township. Businesses were active, licences were bought, and gold was sought and exchanged. Students were off digging for alluvial gold, building tents, baking damper and haggling for goods. The bakers were busy kneading the dough for a delicious taste of damper and syrup. The day ended with everyone searching for gold ‘Eureka’! Then taking their findings back to town to haggle with the Assayers and Claims Officers. Great teamwork and perseverance were shown throughout the many activities in both excursions including sand races, saving your buddy, tent building and gold panning. Our students returned to school clearly exhausted but also remarking on what a great day they had. What's even more impressive is that the company at Eureka felt compelled to ring our school the next day to congratulate our students on their exemplary behaviour and let us know what a pleasure they were to work with. Great job everyone!

Day 10 Success
There is excitement in the air on Day 10. This is when our Year 6 students have an opportunity to sign up for an array of activities throughout the day. This week saw students visiting a local kindy, participating in various workshops such as; cartooning, special effects make-up, origami, painting, Just Dance, craft and cooking, just to name a few. Congratulations to our staff that work really hard to make this happen because our Year 6 students just LOVE it!

OSHC News - Diwali, Festival of Lights
On Monday we celebrated Diwali, the Indian “Festival of Lights” which celebrates the triumph of light over dark and the blessings of freedom, victory and enlightenment.
Diwali consists of five days in India, where the first day is spent cleaning their homes and creating rangoli, an Indian art form.
At OSHC, the children had the opportunity to create their own rangoli designs. Traditionally, rangoli is created using dry rice, flour, coloured sand, flower petals, red ochre, etc. We used food colouring and salt, to create different colours and a grain like texture. We then added glue to our mixture as we designed our rangoli on paper, using simple geometric shapes as well as flower and petal shapes.
This inclusive activity was interactive and assisted children in the development of their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The children enjoyed mixing colours and converting their ideas into three-dimensional artworks.
As we near the end of the 2022 school year, it is time to start considering your Before and After school care needs for 2023.

We encourage families, in an effort to beat the price rise, to consider making any Term 4 or 2023 uniform purchases prior to any 1 November price increase coming into affect.
