Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
We have had a very busy start to the term with lots of learning and school activities. These have included:
Year 5 & 6 Health Days including a visit from an Olympic Athlete, Sara Carrigan, Gold medalist winner in Cycling in the 2004 Athens Olympics, who spoke with our Year 5 & 6 students.

NAIDOC activities which our students thoroughly enjoyed as well as a whole school assembly to celebrate.

AFL QSchools regional Girls competition today and our girls team had a win and some losses but represented our school well.
NAPLAN Update
Student reports were sent home today. Please contact your child's class teacher if you did not receive your child's NAPLAN report.
It is important to note that the rating scale for NAPLAN has now changed. Instead of numbered Band Scales, the following Proficiency Standards are now being used:
Kind regards
Jason

A Concept to Foster Self-Regulation and Emotional Control
At Coomera Rivers, we use The Zones of Regulation to teach self-regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete colored zones. The Zones framework provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, manage their sensory needs, and improve their ability to problem solve conflicts.
A critical aspect of this curriculum is that all of the key people in a child’s life know and understand the zones language. This creates a comfortable and supportive environment for the children to practice self-regulation skills and also helps them learn the skills more quickly and be more likely to apply them in many situations. Over the coming weeks we will share with you how you can support this process a home.

Celebration of Learning
BOOM! CRASH! WHOOSH! This is how Year 2 students are learning to start their narratives so that the reader is hooked in and wants to keep reading. 2B have been writing and reading ‘Sizzling Starts’ that begin with onomatopoeia – not an easy word for 7 and 8 year olds to say! Students have also started using Green Screen to add themselves to our picture writing prompts.
Year 2 classes have launched into a science unit that is out of this world! 2B began by learning about the 8 planets in our solar system (sorry Pluto!) and making beaded bracelets to represent the planets and sun.

Celebration of Learning
During Term 2, Year 3 had fun in Math lessons learning about money, fractions and measurement. After working so hard all term, they were treated with an exciting culmination activity, where they used the knowledge they learnt in these areas and related them to a real life experience – reading and following a recipe to make ‘Hedgehog Slice’. It was a lot of fun and so delicious!

Celebration of Learning
In Term 3, Year 4 students will be exploring how natural processes and human activity cause changes to the Earth’s surface. This week, Year 4 students participated in a lesson and conducted an experiment on erosion where they used a cookie to simulate the concepts of weathering and erosion. The purpose of the experiment was to determine what happens to the amount of erosion when we change the amount of weathering and water poured on the cookie rock. Students formed a prediction following the ‘If, Then, Because’ strategy and were then required to work in small groups to complete the experiment. Observations were recorded via sketches, photos and words. At the conclusion of the experiment, students reflected on their predictions, if they were correct, and why/why not. Lessons and experiments this term will inform and prepare students on how to communicate and participate in scientific processes to demonstrate an understanding of natural processes such as weathering and erosion for their end of term assessment.
