Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
The past fortnight has been packed with so many activities and opportunities for our school and students. It is a result of the wonderful commitment to Highlights have included:
- Year 4 camp
- P&C conference
- Cultural art groups
- Inter-school sport
- Gold Coast Eisteddfod
- Final preparations for Wakakirri
- Science Week
- Free dress day to promote kindness
- Public speaking club - and more.

Cultural artworks are taking shape
We have been very fortunate to have Uncle Anthony from Birin Cultural Group visiting us weekly over the past few weeks. Our First Nations students have been collaborating with Uncle Anthony to create some cultural artworks to display on the poles in our Yarning Circle area. Uncle Anthony has also been yarning with our students, sharing some Kombumerri traditional stories. We look forward to seeing the finished result at the end of the term.

Free dress day
National day of action against bullying and violence
We came in ORANGE today to show our stance against bullying. There have been many lessons across the school this week about what it is to be a friend and a team player, what it is to be kind, and how to stand against bullying. The week concluded with our Pass the Heart activity where, as a school, we passed 7 hearts to each student in a very long line around the school. This was to represent our focus on caring for others. And at the end of the line was me. And we even had an air-show fly over at the very same time!

Unfortunately, bullying and nastiness can and do happen everywhere in our world - including our school. What we do is try at school is create a kind and caring climate to minimise the likelihood of bullying happening. Surprisingly to some, lots of behaviours that can be unkind are not bullying. Click here to read more about this. This doesn't make them acceptable at all but it highlights the fact that we all - parents, teachers and community - need to focus on kindness and care for others if we are to teach our children well. Kindness is the opposite of bullying. Kindness is about putting others first, not self. Kindness is about acceptance and celebrating differences and this is central to strong character.

Student achievements
Working as a team to earn awards or recognition is very satisfying, and it takes a lot of practice and commitment. A great team of players is far superior to a team of great players - and our school teams this week epitomised this, both on the field and on the stage. I am so proud of how our children worked together and practised a 'team first' mindset. It resulted in terrific successes for which they can feel genuine pride.
At Gold Coast Eisteddfod, our four groups earned one first place, two third places and a gold ribbon.
At inter-school sport, we won Division 1 in each of the sports we played - Rugby League, Netball, Basketball and Touch football.

School achievement
Congratulations to our P&C and OSHC Service on being awarded 'Runners Up' in the P&C Queensland Annual Awards (OSHC category). They work so hard each and every day to provide a wonderful service to our community and it is very fulfilling to see them recognised at a state level. Well done team.
And next week...

Regional chess tournament (Monday)
Good luck to our chess teams when they play at the regional tournament next Monday. We will be sending along six teams for the event.

Interviews are planned for Monday afternoon & evening. Thank you to families who have accessed this opportunity.
Wakakirri (Wednesday)
Chookas to our Wakakirri troupe when they present the school performance at the 2023 Wakakirri competition. Wakakirri is similar to a Rock Eisteddfod except the music and silent acting adds a storyline. Send your best vibes for our troupe next Wednesday evening at 7:00pm when we take on other schools at the Logan Entertainment Centre.
Rugby League and Touch Football (Thursady / Friday)
These carnivals are planned for next week. Good luck to our players and coaching staff.
Have a lovely weekend

Celebration of Learning
2S is outta this world! This term we are learning about SPACE! We have had a fantastic first few weeks learning all about the different planets, we now know about the Terrestrial and Gas/Ice Giants! We know how long the planets take to orbit the Sun, how the Moon was formed, where stars are born and so much more! We have even been practicing how to research and find new facts from NASA Kids. We have been using this information to produce some amazing writing, make some glittering solar systems and paint some wonderful pictures. We even have a friend from outer space who writes us letters! The best part though is our Space Station centre! Here we get to dressed up as astronauts, map out our flight path, travel to space in a rocket ship and conduct observations before returning to Earth!

A Queensland champion
Congratulations to Olivia (Year 3) on her rythmic gymnastics achievements these past couple of months. Representing her club, Elite Gymnastics, she competed at her first competition - the Quensland Challenge 2 competition - held at Logan PCYC on June 24. She placed 1st overall amongst all competitors in QLD.
Her final and biggest competition was the Queensland State Championships held at the Logan Sports and Metro Centre on the August 5. Once again, Olivia performed amazingly well and won the event earning two GOLD MEDALS for her freehand and rope routines and one SILVER MEDAL in her hoop routine.
Her coach sees her potential as a future state and national representative due to her determination, work ethic and passion for her sport. Big things lay ahead!

Celebration of Learning
This week in Year 3 we have been learning about 3D shapes. We have been busy engaging in shape scavenger hunts, constructing 3D shape models and learning about the geometric features of 3D shapes. We are looking forward to constructing a 3D shape city in our classrooms out of recycle materials using our learned knowledge. We will keep you updated with some pictures when our cities are created. We are all excited about this learning activity!

Celebration of Learning
What an amazing three days the students and teachers had at Tallebudgera Outdoor and Environmental Centre for the 2023 Year 4 camp. The blue-sky, sunny weather and amazing activities prepared for us made sure that it was a wonderful experience for all students - climbing to new heights, riding waves and swinging through challenges. Comfort zones were forgotten, and students (and teachers) achieved things they never thought they would.
Students showed their willingness to have a go, even when they were scared, pushing their boundaries and supporting their classmates through it all. The Coomera Rivers State School community should be immensely proud of the effort and excellent behaviour shown by the students as representatives of our school. Team challenges gave students the opportunities to show their skills at being cogs, and mealtimes allowed us to enjoy time to refuel and reconnect.
The camp leaders gave feedback about our students, praising their listening skills, behaviour, manners, effort and their willingness to take risks and have a go. Camp is such a wonderful way of making life-long memories and we’re sure the 2023 Year 4s will carry these amazing memories long into the future.

Teachers vs Students - Netball:

'Yes Day':
Year 6 students are offered the chance to participate in a variety of personalised learning opportunities. Teachers with varying passions and interests, from across the school, will be offering a variety of workshops for which students can sign up to. These cover skills, interests, sports, challenges, as well as a variety of arts.
This week, Year 6 students had their very first 'Yes Day' and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience!

Talented Horse Rider:
Huge congratulations to Ruby who recently competed in the 2023 Dalby showjumping competition.

Eisteddfod Success
Our strings and band groups had a very successful fortnight taking out a number of prizes at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod. Our winning haul was:
- Junior Strings: 3rd place
- Senior Strings: Gold Award ribbon
- Junior Band: 1st Place
- Senior Band: 3rds Place
Well done to all the students involved in showcasing their talents and also our dedicated music teachers on these terrific achievements.

Inter-school Sport
Tuesday saw our Year 5 & 6 students participate in the last round of Inter-school Sport for the term. We had many Coomera Rivers teams make the finals and in all four sports, Coomera Rivers took out the win. What a great achievement!
Congratulations to all students for representing our school with pride and showing great sportsmanship throughout the competition.
Basketball
In a very close game, Coomera Rivers 2 Division 1 team won the Grand Final against PSPC.
Rugby League
Coomera Rivers 1 took out the win after a nail-biting Grand Final against Pimpama State School. The final siren saw the two teams draw, so the win went to the team who scored first in the game. Well done Coomera Rivers 1.
Touch
After a very close semi-final win, Coomera Rivers Team 2 fought hard to win the Grand Final against Coomera State School 9 points to 2.

Netball
Our Coomera Rivers Division 1 netball team took out the win against Gainsborough State School. Well done girls!
