Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Congratulations to our public speakers
10 students for Years 5&6 represented our school on Tuesday evening at the AB Paterson College public speaking competition. This is an event that we have maintained involvement in for many years. Like the Year 4 team from late last term, the senior speakers were wonderful. Of the 10 speakers, four have been selected into the finals next week.
Thank you sincerely to the families and teachers who have helped the students across the past months as they prepared for the event.

Below is a small gallery of some of the speakers. It is quite a challenge to get around to each heat at the right time so I apologise to those students we missed.

Speaking respectfully at school
Next week I will be speaking with students once again to discuss appropriate language at school. Unfortunately there has been a recent increase in the number of boys and girls who have been making inappropriate and disrespectful comments to other students. I also ask parents to reiterate to their children that any racial or offensive language is never ok. Please understand that I will be suspending from school any students from Years 3-6 should they speak (or imply an offensive message) in such a manner to other students or staff . This could range from 1 to 20 days. Parents of children in Prep to Year 2 will be called to the school to help us re-teach appropriate conversation. The same requirements will also apply to our OSHC. Our school values all students and we aim to teach children to celebrate people's differences.
Free Dress Day coming
Please support our free dress day by wearing RED on Friday 27 October. We are asking for a gold coin donation to our Student Council - who will in turn donate to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation for school safety programs.
Enjoy the lovely weekend weather
Kind regards
Vic
This coming week - week 3- our annual book fair commences. Students will have the opportunity to visit the fair with their class and peruse all the wonderful books and stationery for sale. One Friday we will have our Book Dress Up Day. We are always stunned by the creativity displayed by students and will once again have prizes for the best costumes in each year level.
During week 4 the book far will be open for students and parents to visit and make purchases. The shop will be open week 4 Mon-Thurs 7:30am-3pm and Friday 7:30am-12:00pm. Purchases can be made by card, cash or online.
If ordering online – Parents pay the purchase amount for the items they want. The receipt number must be taken to Ms Katie at the Book Fair so items can be ordered online. Items cannot be ordered online – only via the fair itself.
If paying by cash – students may bring in small amounts of cash to make purchases (they can buy books and stationery from the fair with cash. Please only send money with students if they are responsible enough to look after this. Younger students should be accompanied by a parent to complete cash purchases. Teachers are not able to look after money for students.

Celebration of Learning
This term Year 2 students are enjoying learning about how to write persuasive letters. As we head into our final writing assessment, 2B are working hard to ‘Bump Up’ our grades by giving each other specific feedback on how to improve. Sophie and Arvin bravely let us analyse their writing to learn how to do this. Watch out parents! Soon these kids will be trying to persuade you to buy them takeaway for dinner every night, and with all their new knowledge and skills they might just win. This term we are also learning about money. All the students in Year 2 made their own piggy bank from a recycled bottle. Now they are earning coins by showing positive, expected behaviours in class. 2B are looking forward to the class shop opening so they can purchase some prizes with their hard-earned cash.

Book Club
This term in Year 4 all students in Literacy have been learning about Book Clubs. Book Clubs are an engaging activity designed with the specific purpose of fostering at an early age a real love of reading. This activity also provides an added benefit to students as it includes teaching of the art of conversation.
In Year 4 we have designed Book Club to be student centred with all students reading the same book. This provides all students with the opportunity to read, reflect, discuss and respond to books in an authentic way. Our eventual goal in Book Club is to promote a love for literature, truly turning all our Year 4 students into lifelong learners.

Global Goals
On Wednesday and Thursday this week, Year 5 students participated in a Global Innovator Workshop. They were grouped on their Global Goal issue and collaborated together to think of solutions to community issues. They began by creating a community map to target a chosen issue. They then developed a Problem Statement and possible questions that they could answer. The students brainstormed solutions and enhanced their ideas by using sentence stems like 'yes and'. They have now chosen a solution that they will continue to develop and work on for the next 6 weeks leading up to our annual Year 5 Tradeshow. We look forward to sharing their ideas.
Sporting achievements
Taycen competed for 4 days of the recent vacation at the 2023 Indoor Cricket State Titles held in Burleigh and was awarded the U12 Player of the Series. Well done Taycen!
Then he competed at the Junior Murri Carnival at Redcliffe representing the U10 Gold Coast Roosters and playing alongside Tyles and AJ. This was also a wonderful experience.

It is with great excitement that we open the orders for our 2024 seniors shirts.
