Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Thank you to the staff and families who supported the school cross-country this week. Because of the nature of long distance running, cross-country is not the visual spectacle of sports fun day, but it is still a great opportunity to see the children participating for thie house team with big smiles. These are important moments for many students and as you will see in the gallery (Sports news), the smiles were many and large, and the team spirit was clearly visible.
Well done to the PE team on yet another very successful carnival.
Parent-teacher interviews are coming soon
Next issue I will advertise the links and codes to register a parent-teacher interview appointment. The interviews will be held on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 March. All interviews are in the school hall after school. Interviews can only be secured through the on-line booking system so stay tuned.
NAPLAN is coming for Years 3&5
NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year.
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress nor do the results measure overall school quality.
Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.
School crossings are safest
Please use the school crossings when walking to and from school and expect that your children do this, even if you are not with them.
I received a message from a local resident this week who explained that they almost hit a student this morning when they crossed Finnegan Way away from the crossing where drivers are anticipating children and their parents will cross.
Kids won't usually get a second chance if struck by a motor vehicle. I just need all parents to ask themselves if their child is worth the extra walk to the crossing or not?
Never looked better
Maths whiz
Congratulations to Kayreen (5E) on her exceptional achievement! Graduating from the mental arithmetic/abacus course with UCMAS on February 24th, 2024, and achieving an outstanding score of 94% on the final exam at Level 8 (120 questions) is truly commendable. Completing this minimum 4-year duration course, dedicated to developing mental arithmetic skills and speedy calculation beyond the regular school curriculum, showcases Kayreen's commitment and proficiency. Mental arithmetic not only enhances mathematical abilities but also contributes to concentration, observation, listening, imagination, visualization and memory. A heartfelt congratulations to Kayreen for reaching this significant academic milestone!
Kokoda training starts in earnest
The Kokoda squad hit the trails early last Saturday morning at The Spit. It was great to spend the early morning with our families as we all work towards the challenge in June. The squad managed to train for 7-8km across the hour.
Next session we will be looking to add to that distance and also build on increasing our running time from 60 minutes to 90 minutes.
Thank you sincerely to the staff team who supported the session and special thanks to Tina and Tarrah for their photos.

Celebrating Prep
Our prep students were super excited to participate in their first ever school sports event. Our Rivers Rangers have been helping to spread the word about playing for fun, fitness and friendship in the playground too.

Celebrating Year 1
Families were welcomed into classrooms across year 1 to engage in some different activities with their children. It was lovely to see students sharing not only actviites with with family members, such as making craft or reading a book, but even sharing their family members with some fellow students. Year 1 have also been busy with their retell writing practise. Ms Waide was very impressed with the great work shown by students this week. To get into the spirit of Clean Up Australia day some year 1 students helped clean up the year 1 playground area. And 1/2B got the opportunity to get up close and personal with some stick insects as they begin looking at minibeasts and prepare to meet some more on the upcoming year 1 excursion.

Celebrating Year 2
In 20 over the last few weeks, we have been learning about measurement, capacity and weight. We also were caught reading, writing, and doing fractions. We have been so busy with our learning.

Servicing your bike will help keep it in pristine condition to maintain performance and ensure that you’re riding a bike that is safe. Often people have invested a lot of money in their bike and don’t worry much about servicing, but just like your car you need to service your bike regularly. Servicing your bike will increase the life of your parts and give you a much better riding experience.
99 Bikes, proud sponsors of our Term 1 River Reward program, have not only been kind enough to donate a bike that one lucky Year 4 – 6 students will win this Term, they have also put together an exclusive package of offers for our families to help with the safety and servicing of your bikes.
Please see the attached flyer for full details.
We thank 99 Bikes for the support of our school and community.
