Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
The weather this past week has seen us go without our normal play opportunities. We still have our breaks each day, but the playgrounds have been closed. Keeping a class inside for a majority of each day can tend to breed some cabin fever, so well done to our staff and students on getting through the week so well.
We broke up the week with a small disco where we learned some dances in preparation for the school disco in a few weeks. We are hoping to impress the mums and dads with our YMCA and Nutbush.
NAPLAN testing is underway
Students in Years 3 and 5 are most of the way through their NAPLAN testing program and just have the numeracy test to go on Monday. Thank you to our teachers for leading the students through these activities and the P&C for providing our 'Genius Water', fruit each day and a celebration box for when we have completed the testing program.
3J celebrated the end of the reading test with a Just Dance session.

Cybersafety sessions with the Department of Education
On Friday 6 May, Jacqui from the Department of Education, Cybersafety Reputation and Management team, visited Coomera Rivers and delivered Cybersafety sessions to our Year 4,5 and 6 students.
Jacqui talked with the students about their digital journey as a digital citizen and the importance of being safe online. She explained to our students how they are creating a digital footprint when they are online. Jacqui reminded our students that they must be over the age of 13 to have accounts and access most social media platforms. She also talked about privacy settings, password protection and personal information and what is safe to share online. Jacqui also gave the students tips on what to do if they experience problems online.
Jacqui shared the following websites that talk more about Cybersafety:
We are always thankful to our mums, dads and carers for supporting their children to be safe when online and complying with age restrictions and account creation.

Good Start
Our QLD Health program, Good Start, has commenced for Year 1 and 2 students this term. This program is offered to Māori and Pasifika students as it taps in to culture and customs of the Pacific Islands. This term, students are learning about the 5 food groups and what foods are needed for our bodies to grow strong and healthy. Next term, this will be offered to students in years 3 and 4.

Good luck Lyla
Best wishes to Lyla (4W) when she competes in both the State and National Championships for roller skating in the coming weeks.
Simple maths games for home
We are making a series of short mathematics videos that are aimed at how parents can help their children at home to become better at their mathematics. The videos are created by the very clever, Mrs Young. This week, she is working with Ryder to practice skip counting. This is a Year 1 skill but still appropriate for Prep and Year 2. Click here to watch the video.
Kind regards
Vic
Awful weather did not stop these top learners...

In mathematics this week, Year 2O and 2B focused on time and some delicious fractions.

In 2T we have been learning about team work and collaboration. We have spoken about the importance of working together collaboratively and how every member of the team is valued and needs to work towards an agreed common goal. The students are learning to take turns in sharing their ideas and working together to solve problems. Today they worked in groups with some materials and were asked to build anything they wanted. The only rules were that they had to work together and they all had to contribute to the construction. Mrs Taylor was impressed with the designs and what they had built together.

Learning about citizenship
During this term in Year 5 the students are diving deep into the Global Goals for their Humanities and Social Sciences unit of work, "How can we use our understanding of the Global Goals to make a difference in our community?" Students are identifying local issues in their community, collecting information by interviewing members of the community, and understanding the different viewpoints relating to an issue in our community.
Year 5 have been very lucky to have different charities and organisations come to us and deliver real world insights into some issues that impact our community. We thank the following:
- Energy Matters (Global Goal #7 Affordable and Clean Energy)
- Boots for One and All Community (Global Goal #1 No Poverty, Global Goal #3 Good Health & Well-being)
- Rural Aid Australia (Global Goal #15 Life on Land)
- Care Kits for Kids Qld Inc. (Global Goal #1 No Poverty, Global Goal #4 Quality Education)
- Transplant Australia (Global Goal #3 Good Health & Well-being)
- Share the Dignity (Global Goal #1 No Poverty)
- Beddown (Global Goal #1 No Poverty)
These organisations make a difference in our community, and we are being informed on how we could possibly help. Student engagement, understanding and participation is to be commended.
