Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
I am amazed at how successful our children and school has been across the past fortnight. A scan through the Sensations Students section of this issue will show you how well many kids are impressing their teachers and how many of them are already looking at being an future elite sportsman or woman.
We competed at the Kokoda Challenge last Saturday evening and the results were incredible. One of our teams was the first primary school to finish the 18km challenge and their time was mightily impressive as well. Congratulations to all of the runners and I extend my sincere thanks to the staff who assisted at the event or at the training sessions.
Thank you to all of the staff who set up or led the parent-teacher interviews this week. It is always a huge logistic challenge and this year was very smooth once again.
Congratulations to the school's sustainability team on winning a grant to assist them with paper recycling. The $500 from Michael Crandon - Member for Coomera, was very graciously received by our environmental warriors this week.

COVID
Our COVID and Influenza cases are continuing to rise at school with staff and students affected. I hope that everyone is doing all they can to remain well and healthy during this time.
The Department contacted me this week to discuss the wearing of masks at school. The Premier has encouraged all people, including school staff and students, to wear a face mask indoors, except where they can physically distance. This is the choice of the individual though. And at school we will support anyone who wishes to do so.
Those who wish to wear a mask need to provide their own - but we have a small supply that can be used in emergency if necessary. Please also remember that requirements remain in place for wearing a face mask for seven days:
- after having COVID-19, or
- when considered a close contact.
Additionally, there are ongoing public health requirements to wear a face mask when travelling on public transport.
RATs
If students or staff become unwell at school and show symptoms of COVID, we will offer to provide them a free RAT to take home.
COVID-safe practices
As we have been doing throughout the pandemic, key safety measures remain in place across all schools. These include staying 1.5 m away from other people whenever possible, practising good hygiene such as always washing hands with soap and water (including before and after eating and going to the toilet), and reminding everyone to stay home when sick.
Dental News
The dental van has left Coomera Rivers and is now located at Picnic Creek school. If your child missed having a check up for free while we were at the school you can still attend at the new location. The service is available for full check ups and treatment or emergency appointments anytime through the year including during the school holidays. Phone 1300 300 850 for bookings. All children from 4 years of age through to their last day of Year 10 are eligible. All consultations are free, even if you don't get the Child Dental Benefits Scheme money. So keep brushing twice daily and limit sugar frequency to keep your beautiful smile.
Kind regards
Vic
Congratulations to these students on an awesome start to Term 3.

Playing alongside high schoolers
Over the school holidays, Ashtiva undertook her Grade 2 AMEB exam for violin. This entailed general knowledge questions, aural questions, and playing several pieces of music: Theme from Witches Dance, Chiquilín de Bachín, Wild West, Still Reeling, and a couple of others. She has been practicing the songs since January, and was very nervous when she saw the very big high school students sitting next to her!

Lyla in 4W accomplished a great achievement over the school holidays. Lyla competes in artistic roller skating and trains very hard on 3 days each week for 3-4 hours each day.
She became the Queensland state champion earlier in the year and was nominated to skate at the Australian National Competition. The Nationals were held over the holidays and Lyla skated so well in her 3 events representing Queensland. She is now an Australian Champion!
Lyla’s amazing results include:
- Primary Girls free dance (GOLD medal and Australian champion)
- Primary Girls Solo dance (SILVER)
- Primary Girls figures (SILVER)

From school to academy
Congratulations to Cruz on his invitation to the National Tennis Academy. He attends the academy each week and is working hard on developing his game.
He was also invited to represent the invitational team for South Coast in Cairns in
August. This makes him in the Top 8 tennis players for his age on the South Coast region. Wow!
Australian championship
Amy recently competed at the National Table Tennis Championships held on the Sunshine Coast in early July. She won:
- silver in the Under-11 team event
- bronze medal in the Under-11 doubles event.
She also lost just one game and won all of her team matches, reached #3 on the national table tennis rankings for her age group. And we are also very proud to announce that Amy was selected as a member of the National Squad. Congratulations Amy!

Every day heroes
Over the first 6 weeks of this term, 6WC and 6K are inviting different 'characters' (everyday heroes/ members of our community), to come in and share their journey and how they overcome challenging moments in their life. These visits are preparing students for their writing task for the term where the assessment is asking students to write a character analysis.
The classes have now welcomed Miss King (in week 1) in to talk about her Diabetes journey and parent of school, Nicola Danielson (in week 2) in to talk about her sight and hearing loss. These two ladies have kick-started these sessions with enormous success and the students and teachers cannot wait to welcome 4 more in the coming weeks. The year 6 students proved a level of maturity, empathy and engagement far beyond their years with both the respect and questioning during both talks. One of the best parts, following the talk, was sharing the character traits that the students believed matched the guests then seeing happy tears well up in the eyes of those special guests.
Kokoda Challenge
Congratulations to the students and coaches who completed the Kokoda Challenge last Saturday, 16 July. The challenge started at 3:00pm and many of our teams finished in the dark. It was an incredible event, where every single one of our teams pushed themselves to their absolute limits - very inspiring! Our Crusaders 1 team was the first primary school to finish the 18km event and our remaining four teams were close behind. We are extremely proud of everyone’s efforts. Thank you to those who came to support on the event.

of the P&C Association
The next general meeting of the P&C Association will be held on Tuesday 18 February at 7:00pm, via TEAMS.
Please email the P&C at pandc@coomerariversss.eq.edu.au for a TEAMS link.
P&C meetings are a great way to keep up to date with what is going on around our school. The meetings also provide our families with an opportunity to have input and feedback on matters relating to school and community life. Meetings are open to all families and we encourage families to attend our on-line meeting and contribute to your school community which forms a vital part of your children's educational journey.
We look forward to seeing you on-line at our next meeting.
Volunteer Induction - additional opportunity to register for 2022
From July 1, the COVID vaccination mandate was repealed by the Premier. This means that volunteers no longer need to be vaccinated to contribute to the school. As a consequence, we will now provide a window of opportunity for parents previously ineligible to register for volunteering in classrooms and excursions due to the mandate, to now register and complete the annual induction process.
Parents looking to take advantage of this additional registration opportunity will have until Friday 5 August to do so.
No further inductions and registrations for 2022 volunteers will be processed after this date
Please remember, in order to offer your assistance at an excursion, in the classroom, in the cafe, at school events or in any other capacity within the school, you MUST have completed the registration and induction process.
2024 Year 6 senior shirt opportunity
It is with great excitement that we open the orders for our 2024 seniors shirts.
Our Year 5 students have been involved in a design development process that culminated in six designs being presented to the cohort. Every Year 5 student was then able to vote on their favourite with the design with the most votes becoming our 2024 senior shirt design.
An image of the finalised design for 2024 can be found below.
Important information - What you need to know.
- Orders are open to our current Year 5 (Class of 2024) students only
- Orders are open now via School24 and will close at 4pm Friday 17 November
- The cost of the shirt is $35
- REALLY IMPORTANT! When determining sizing, please refer to the size charts available below (and on the School24 site) or you can email the P&C to book a time to try on sample sizes. Please ensure that you check and order the correct sizes as there is no exchange of sizes available once your order has been placed.
- Families that would like to purchase but, for any reason, are not able to make full payment before the deadline date, can email the P&C to request a payment plan. Please note - to be eligible for a payment plan your school credit rating must be in good standing - meaning you have no outstanding payments to school or, if you currently are on a school payment plan, your payments are up to date.
- The school requires that a minimum of 100 student orders are received for the senior shirt to proceed. If orders do not reach this target, we will process refunds and not proceed with the order for this year.
- The 2024 Senior shirt can be worn on sports days at school.
- Students will still need to have a standard "green" shirt as these must be worn when representing our school off site requires full sport uniform.
- 2024 Senior Shirts will be handed out in Term 1 Week 4 of 2024 after confirmation that students have the full correct "blues" and "greens" uniform.
- The seniors shirt is not able to be signed at school at the end of the year as a memento

Orders now open
Each year we offer our graduating class the chance to purchase a signature bear as a memento of their time at Coomera Rivers.
The signature bears are available to order now via School24 with orders closing on Friday 23 August at 4pm. If you do require a deadline extension you MUST email the P&C prior to the deadline to request one.
Once the deadline has past, orders will then be arranged and personalised (with class of 2024 school logo) and will arrive in time to be distributed to class late in Term 4 with students offered the opportunity to have their bears signed by their peers and teachers before bringing them home.
If you require more information please email the P&C.
We would like to offer our Prep students the chance to create their own little masterpiece as a souvenir of their first year at school.
While saved artwork on paper can tear and fade, children’s art that is turned into any one of the products listed on the below flyer can be enjoyed for many years. And they make a great Christmas gift!
