Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Term 3 has drawn to an end and, believe it or not, just 49 school days remain for the 2022 school year. And these days will be packed with learning, assessments, sporting, cultural and academic activities for our young learners. The calendar above is just the beginning of our planning.
The past fortnight has seen us extremely busy. Headlining our achievements have been:
- Wakakirri 2023: Coomera Rivers is now in the running for the national awards. Our music department has really been excelling recently, and Wakakirri showed, in my opinion, the very best of what our school offers. I was just so impressed with how closely the teachers and students worked, to produce an amazing performance.
- Coomera Cup: We took on Coomera Springs in a variety of sports this week in the annual Coomera Cup. I was delighted with the spirit (Fun-Fitness-Friendship) shown by our athletes and spectators. Thank you sincerely to the coaches for their guidance across the past season and also to the mums and dads who were able to come along to cheer on the Crusaders.
- Flash mob: Once again our school came out each afternoon to show off our dance skills. It was terrific fun and I know the families who were able to watch were just as impressed as me.
We were also involved in the Year 2 excursion to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, REACH program, STEM Olympiad, AB Paterson public speaking competition for Year 4, Year 5 Surf Safety program, brilliant culminating activities, a regular fire evacuation drill and multiple awards assemblies. And those adults who were able to attend one of the final KISS concerts watched a moment in entertainment history.

Thank you to the school staff for their enormous contributions this term. The opportunities that our staff provide our children are immense. My sincere appreciation is extended to all of our staff team who contributed so significantly to the successes this term. Well done!
Personal safety and TRUE Relationships programs
We will be conducting our personal safety and TRUE relationship programs early next term. Your teachers will notify you of the content and when the program will be implemented.
I hope that everyone now enjoys a lovely spring break.
Kind regards
Vic

City of Ember
5W really embraced their City of Ember unit, linking their reading, writing, maths and science around this novel. In building the city, students worked as a team and demonstrated their collaboration skills to ensure quality outcomes. The enthusiasm and results from the students were outstanding.
Have a look at some parts of the city and then the final collaboration activity, putting the city together piece by piece.

5M Celebrates City of Ember
This week 5M loved watching the movie 'The City of Ember' and comparing the differences and similarities between the movie and the book. The class was divided, some students preferred the book, having the excitement build and being able to imagine the characters themselves. Other students said they liked seeing the characters in the movie for 'real' and that it didn't take as long to watch the movie as it did to read the book. They loved having canned peaches and pineapple (a book reference) and some students chose to dress as their favourite character.

Global Innovators
In Week 9, our Year 5 teachers and students ran a highly successful Global Innovators Trade Show. Throughout the term, our students have been thinking like entrepreneurs and were asked to collaboratively tackle a community issue based on one of the global goals. This was certainly an opportunity where students needed to demonstrate their ability to work like cogs using teamwork to present a solution to their chosen issue. The displays and pitches were outstanding and it was fabulous to see students demonstrating the Citizenship competency of having a genuine interest in human and environmental sustainability.
Guest speakers who are industry experts as entrepreneurs were invited to attend the afternoon session where a number of selected groups were chosen to pitch their idea. The students’ solutions to real world problems were inspiring and it’s exciting to see them realising that they can be part of the solution and contribute.

Surf Safety
Surf Life Saving Queensland educates more than 500,000 people about surf safety each and every year. This frontline approach to safety allows the public and students to make informed, and potentially lifesaving, decisions before even stepping onto a beach. Over 2 days our Year 5 learned how to save lives in and out of the water, with a little bit of fun on the side. And what glorious weather they had!

Swipe for light
Our Year 6 classes have been building their Solar Buddy lights. These will be sent overseas to a child who needs it and will eliminate their need to expose themselves to the dangers of kerosene lanterns. What a difference our students are making. So proud of them ✨

Everyday Heroes - Gallery Walk
Throughout the term, students in 6K and 6WC have had the opportunity to meet and interview some extremely inspiring human beings that live in our immediate community. These guests were invited into their classrooms to share their life story and challenges. Each student then selected one of these amazing individuals and wrote a character analysis essay about them, highlighting the character traits that made them an ‘Everyday hero’. This week, students shared their work through a Gallery Walk Expo and invited parents, staff and other students to read about these inspirational people. These everyday heroes were also invited back to the Gallery Walk to read about how our students admired them. The event was both heart-warming and impressive. Our students did an amazing job in not only honouring these people but their writing demonstrated a level of maturity worth celebrating.

South Coast Athletics
Last week we had 6 of our students compete at the South Coast Athletics carnival at Runaway Bay- Scarlet, Bailey, Henko, Jacob, Mylah and Zane. Each of them should be super proud of their effort, going up against the best students on the Gold Coast. Congratulations to Scarlet (Long Jump) and Bailey (Shot Put) who have qualified for the state carnival, representing South Coast. Bailey also won her event, meaning she is the best shot putter on the Gold Coast for her age.

Coomera Cup
On Thursday, Coomera Rivers took in Coomera Springs in the annual Coomera Cup. We played Netball, Rugby League, Touch and Basketball, and the school that wins each sport taking home the trophy.
