Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
It has been a busy week at school once again especially given the range of opportunities available to children at Coomera Rivers. The list of extra-curricular options is long, especially as the students progress their way through the school. I applaud the additional efforts of our school staff in providing these. Well done.
Clean Up Australia Day
We recognised Clean up Australia Day this week. Thank you to the Environmental Warriors who have led this activity at our school. Ms Landers and her staff team have been super in promoting it. Every piece of litter we manage to get to the bin is one less threat to our environment.

What we will get better at this year is:
Reading
Being a strong reader is central to being Good at learning. Each day at school I am visiting classes during reading lessons. I must say that the skills of our teachers are amazing! These sessions are a true highlight for me as I watch the children learning. Sometimes it is whole class lessons on sounds - other times I see the great work theyr are doing with comprehension and spelling.

On-time attendance
Every day at school is another great day of learning opportunities. We need all of them to be Good at learning. It doesn't make sense to me that some children don't come along. They should only ever stay home if they are unwell.
While missing one day of school each fortnight doesn't sound like much, it will really add up quickly. This will equate to 20 days across the year or, to look at it another way, four weeks of learning time missed. If this pattern was maintained across primary school, the students will miss 140 days of school or the larger part of one entire school year. Kids who miss school are significantly disadvantaged.
Remember, our attendance target is:
Character
Character is a cornerstone of being Good at life. At Coomera Rivers, we teach it and talk about it all the time. Respect for self and others, respect for rules and standards are just some of the things we aim to instil.
Story dogs
Kind regards
Vic

2S Celebration of Learning
For the last two weeks, we have been busy learning about fractions! 2S became chefs, designing and making pizzas with toppings carefully divided amongst eight slices. We also became artists and made wonderful fraction art using halves, quarters and eighths.

3H Celebration of Learning
We had a creative time in 3H this week with symmetry! We looked at right angles and other angles that were bigger and smaller than 90 degrees. We had a good time listening to upbeat songs about angles and getting the opportunity to make some patterns with colourful shapes that we found the lines of symmetry on! Next time you see us, ask us to show you the lines of symmetry that are all around us.

Brisbane Olympic Games is the goal for our top skateboarder
Congratulations to Louie in Year 4 for placing 2nd in the OPEN Division of the Skateboarding competition, Bowlzilla, held at the Gold Coast held last weekend (https://www.bowlzilla.net/). This is a huge achievement for Louie, at 9 years of age, competing against adults who have been skateboarding their whole life!
Watch Louie's amazing run here - https://youtu.be/M60ravY3C40
We look forward to hearing more stories of Louie's success in the future!

4E Celebration of Learning
Over the past few weeks in Year 4, we have been hands on-in our Science lessons, investigating Contact and Non-Contact Forces through some super fun experiments. Students have loved testing out push/pull and friction with our marshmallow catapults and tried to beat Gravity with our student-made ‘ball in a cup’ games.

We need to fill two parent positions on the school council through re-election.
Our school council provides a valuable strategic focus for our school. It helps me, as Principal, link the department priorities to those of the school and community. It is a consultative group that meets each term and investigates our plans, considers our improvement data and achievements, and keeps our school focused on our goal. It is different to the P&C. While playing another vital role in the school and community, the P&C is more focused on consultation and forms the direct link between the school and the community.
Make-up of the school council
Our school council has three parent positions – the selection of each of each is determined through an election process. We have been careful to ensure that not all three positions become vacant at the one time.
Of the three parent positions on the School Council, TWO of those positions are up for re-election this year.
If you are interested in nominating or know someone who may like to be nominated, please read on.
Process
Nominations Open: FRIDAY, 17 FEBRUARY. Nominations forms are available from Corporate Services between 8:00am and 3.30pm or by emailing the returning officer - Leonie Jenkins
Nominations Close: FRIDAY 10 MARCH 3.00PM Nominations must be received by the returning officer, via Corporate Services, before the deadline. These can be emailed to returning officer or delivered to Corporate Service between 8:00am and 3.00pm school days.
