Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
The heat wave that ended our school week was certainly draining. Rest assured that we can manage quite comfortably in extended periods of excessive heat. Our classrooms are all air-conditioned, we have plenty of shade, we drink lots of water and we wear sunscreen and hats when outdoors. We also try to stay out of the sun on these really hot days but convincing some kids can be a challenge.
Decision on cross-country
The cross-country is scheduled for next Thursday. I am a little concerned about the unseasonal heat continuing into next week. If it does continue like it was today, we will postpone. We will make the decision by Tuesday and notify families as I know many of you have made arrangements with your work. At this stage we are going ahead. The forecast is for a very warm day but the high heat from this week should be passed by then. Time will tell.
NAPLAN testing
We are over half way through our NAPLAN testing regime and I am delighted with the efforts and determination of staff and students alike. This is a massive logistical undertaking by the school and things have been smooth thus far.

What is in our sights this year?
Our aspiration for every student is to be
Good at learning - Good at life
To achieve this in 2023, we will be focused on:
Reading
- We are focused on all students developing a deep love of reading and being successful in learning to read and comprehend texts.
- We need families to read at home - a lot!
Deep learning
- We will be further developing character, citizenship and collaboration skills for all learners.
- We need all students to attend school as a strong routine. Our target is 95% attendance. We need families to create strong school routines across each week and each day.
Does strong attendance make any difference?
Strong attendance leads to optimum learning outcomes and lower anxiety for children and stronger partnerships between parents and teachers - it is as simple as that.
Kokoda training
The first training session for the school's Kokoda Challenge was completed last Saturday at Burleigh Heads. It was a spectacular sunrise and the children trained hard with their teachers and parents. Our next training session is at Nerang State Forest tomorrow morning where we experience trail running for the first time this year.

We are Ecomarines
This year Coomera Rivers has team up with Tangalooma EcoMarines to support our Environmental Leaders in creating and sustaining initiatives in our school. Our Environmental Warriors, Lila, Evelyn and Meah and our Cultural Leader Liliana, were presented with their Eco-Marine Ambassador t-shirts last Friday. They will wear these shirts when they attend the EcoMarine workshop in May.
On Tuesday, our EcoMarine Ambassadors met with Aaron from EcoMarines and Bree from the Gold Coast City Council to chat about the initiatives that we are currently doing in our school and brainstormed ideas for possible solutions for other environmental concerns that we notice at Coomera Rivers. We look forward to working alongside Tangalooma EcoMarines this year and the workshop at Tangalooma in May.

On excursion this week
On Monday, our Year 1 excursions to Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre commenced with 1K and 1J spending the day there. Students had a fantastic day exploring habitat boxes that were scattered around the centre and enjoyed learning about reptiles in the 'snake pit'. The highlight of the day for all students proved to be the visit to the mangroves. They loved getting muddy while learning about mangrove trees and going on crab hunts. The students' adventurous day led to some fantastic recount writing this week and was a perfect introduction for our Term 2 Science Unit. The remaining Year 1 classes will head off on their excursion next Monday and Tuesday.

Celebration of Learning
This week the Year 3 classes have worked hard to complete their NAPLAN tests. A big shout out of thanks to the P&C for our celebration boxes - we are looking forward to opening them on Monday after our last NAPLAN test - and for the Genius Water which is keeping the children hydrated. Thank you also to all parents who sent letters of encouragement, your children were delighted. Students have been using their perseverance and resilience to try their best on all their tests.

Celebration of Learning
In Weeks 7 and 8, the Year 4 cohort have completed their HASS Identity Deep Learning Task. This task required students to describe factors such as cultural, religious and/or social that shape their identity and sense of belonging. Students were asked to select an artefact from home, write a script and complete a voice recording to culminate into a final presentation for this assessment. A QR code was then created to be displayed in their classroom to create an interactive session for Identity Day. Students and families were able to scan the QR codes and learn more about one another.

Marvellous Mapping in 5GH
Students in 5GH enjoyed an outdoors lesson on the courts where they used their mapping skills to search and locate, use grid co-ordinates and then return and design a map of their own.

NAPLAN Success
Well done to our students for how well they have coped with NAPLAN tests this week. The style of these tests are not common in primary school which is why we must always prepare our students so they are calm and have resilience to complete them. We must remember that NAPLAN is a National test at a point in time and is not used towards school report card grades.
It was nice to see siblings encourage their brothers and sisters :) We have 1 more official day of NAPLAN and then Tuesday will be catch-up from the test the day before.

Cross Country
Cross Country is still scheduled for next Thursday 23 March. Remember to wear your house colours, your hat and bring your water bottle. It might be a warm day. If the heat wave continues into next week, we will make a decision on Tuesday, based on the forecast for Thursday. We will not compete if the heat wave continues.
Sports House Shirt delivery update
Our Sports House Shirt orders were due for distribution to families today however, due to a freight delay, we have not as yet received the order from the provider.
The tracking currently shows the stock in Sydney and we are hopeful that the delivery will be here Monday or Tuesday and we will then arrange immediate distribution of orders.
We are providing this update so families can make alternative plans if, in the unlikely event, the freight does not arrive prior to Cross Country next Thursday.
We will provide a further update via the school's Facebook page on Monday 20 March.
The provider apologises for the delay however the freight delays are outside of their control at present.
