We respectfully acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which we walk, live and learn, the Bullongin & Kombumerri people. We pay our deepest respects to Elders resting in the Dreamtime and to the Elders of today, who will continue to care, protect and nurture the Country that we gather on to learn and connect. We feel both privileged, and grateful to now be sharing and caring for the country on which we are living and learning.
Update: Our school and TC Alfred
Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
I hope that by now you are as prepared as possible for the impending arrival of Cyclone Alfred. I hope that everyone keeps safe and well across the next few days while this event passes. The forecast is for 200+mm of rain each day for each of the next few days and this will more than likely lead to flooding. Please remember to avoid driving through flooded roads and keep children away from flooded areas.
You can keep up to date with all the cyclone information here.
Once the cyclone passes we will need to asses the condition of the school campus for the safety of students and staff. The school cannot re-open until this is safety assessment is completed. I will keep everyone informed so that we can get back to school safely and smoothly.
Events, dates and times may change. Please check the school calendar regularly to keep updated.

Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
These are indeed, very interesting days. There seems to me to be natural disasters occuring with increasing regularity, and the Gold Coast has certainly received its share of them. These tougher times tend to bring out the best of Australian character in our communities, and I know that this event will be no different. We only succeed when we all succeed.
Our young genius
Congratulations to Kayreen (6P) on completing the highest level of the UCMAS Abacus Extension Program. She has achieved an outstanding score of 92% on the final exam (100 questions). UCMAS enhances students' mental arithmetic, memory and concentration through the abacus. Kayreen's remarkable achievement reflects her commitment and dedication. We are all incredibly proud of her success and look forward to even greater accomplishments in the future. Well done!
School calendar changes
The calendar events for the next couple of weeks are being reviewed as a result of TC Alfred. Please check in regularly as we re-plan for these events.
Parent-teacher interviews are postponed
A new date will be determined at some point this week. The probable date is Monday 17 March but this still needs to be confiremed.
Our school focuses for 2025
We have three improvement focuses for 2025. They are:
1. Improve our standards in English
-
- Teachers are sending home either weekly or fortnightly newsletters containing a lot of information about the learning focuses at school.
- We are dedicating professional learning and time to monitor the development of every learner. While this may not be visible to families, it is a daily event at school.
- You will see English Learning Walls in every classroom that support the sequence of lessons that students have completed. Together with our Deputies and Heads of Department, I visit classrooms each week to speak to students about their learning.

2. Improve student behaviour
-
- We teach behaviour and expectations every day. You will see Ready to Learn Walls in every classroom that support the sequence of lessons that students have completed.
- Teachers are sending emails to families about the awesomeness of a student in their class each week. Sometimes more than one student is recognised - which is even better!
- Staff are emailing families where they have managed behaviour at school. These emails are just for your information as we have managed the reteaching of expectations at school. Serious matters will always be managed by Deputies and senior staff at school, in partnership with families.
- The teaching of student leadership is different this year. We only have two set representatives - Emily and Nia. All other leadership roles in sport, cultural groups, environmental groups and playground leadership is by application and it is open to all students in the selected year levels. We teach students about service and commitment and acknowledge their contributions.
- We are continuing with The Resilience Project to support the emotional development of every student.
- We reward and acknowledge student behaviour standards with Rivers Rewards. Students need to collect these in their passbook and when they reach a milestone score, they earn a prize. Each term, a major prize will be offered to all students who reach the target. The recent Free Dress Day was an example of a reward event. The biggest prizes will be a slip n slide day, a movie day, and possibly a magic show.
Free dress day this term (Stripes theme)
3. Increase community engagement with the school
-
- You will already notice more communication from the school each week. Along with the weekly school newsletter, teachers are sending home either weekly or fortnightly class newsletters containing a lot of information about the learning focuses and events at school.
- Teachers and students are inviting families into classrooms to share learning and school together.
- We are planning and holding events for our community to come together. These include the Christmas Concert and this year, the return of our community fete.
- We are investing heavily in the development our school facilities for school events.

I encourgae you to speak with your children and your teachers about these focuses and let me know what you think.
Kind regards
Vic
Congratulations to these awesome students on their fabulous efforts in Week 6!

Celebrations of Learning - Week 6
Year 3
This week in Science, 3A has been getting their hands dirty while learning about different types of soil! We explored sand, clay, and silt, discovering their unique textures and properties. As part of our investigation, we conducted an experiment by placing different soil samples in water to observe how they settled into distinct layers. It was fascinating to see how each component separated, helping us understand the differences between them. Science has never been so much fun!
Year 4
In year 4 we have been having so much fun with our science unit exploring different forces that are used within games. We have been making predictions about what will happen and discussing observations of the different forces being used when playing the games. During these lessons we have worked in small groups, sharing equipment and following directions to create experiments and complete tests. We have been learning to work as cogs in a team and ensure that everyone is participating and contributing to the group.
With the looming cyclone on its way we decided that we would do some research into cyclones, to find out the force that is behind the storm. We even wrote some creative narratives with a stormy theme and illustrations.

Year 5
Mrs Leick sure does love maths! She’s introduced us to lots of maths games including Target 100, Five Dice, Shoot Out, Buzz Off and Calculator Crash. These activities help us to recall our number facts, fine tune our addition skills, consolidate our knowledge of multiples and help us to understand place value. We like the opportunity to work in small groups or with a partner to improve our mathematical abilities. We’re looking forward to more fun maths.
Year 6
This week in Science, students in 6M have been planning and conducting an investigation to identify the best environment to store bread and minimise mould growth. To conduct this experiment, students identified the variables that affect the growth of mould and chose several locations around the room to store the bread. Students will now monitor changes over the upcoming weeks through photographing and recording. Students thoroughly enjoyed brainstorming the possible locations the bread could be stored in and the factors that will encourage or inhibit the growth of mould.
The Annual General Meeting of the Coomera Rivers State School P&C will be held on Monday 28 April at 5.30pm in the Corporate Services building of Coomera Rivers State School.
A general meeting of the association will be held directly after the AGM.
