Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Another short week this week kept everyone very busy at school. Next week is NAPLAN week where students in Years 3&5 will be completing their national testing programs. Thank you to our staff for their wonderful efforts to prepare our children for these tests.
These tests are not the most important thing your children will do this year. While the tests focus on literacy and numeracy, they do not test for creativity, grit and tenacity, character and more. Your teachers however, do make these judgements on what are very important aspects about being a great human. While I want everyone to do well in these tests, I am more interested in the student report cards which will be sent home in Week 10 this term.
We are a finalist again this year
This week, Coomera Rivers was officially nominated as a finalist in The Australian Education Awards in the Innovation in Learning Environment Design category. It is worth noting that we are the only government state school selected in this category. Congratulations to us.

The winners will be announced at a gala function in Sydney in late August.
The poppet black market
Poppets are a giant fad at the moment and I am sure that your children have been bugging you for one. As their popularity has risen, some students have started to trade and swap them at school and, I believe, this black market is running hot. We strongly discourage this and will be telling students that this is not allowed to happen.
I believe that these poppets are fun and I do not usually mind that students have them. However, if your children lose theirs at school, it is not the responsibility of staff to become involved. It is a case of popper beware!
Play time at school is changing
We are about to embark on the most significant change to our playtime in the past 10 years at Coomera Rivers. Two things are planned. First, we are opening our Loose Parts areas to students of all year levels and second, we will also trial multi-age play areas. While this is a trial, I am really confident that this will be successful. This trial won't start for a few weeks yet but be ready when your child comes home to tell you about their day.
People will be upset with you if...
Respectful and considerate behaviour in the car park is just so important but not everyone is demonstrating this. Other motorists will be frustrated and upset with you if you are:
- Double parking in school car park
- Park in the bus zone making it harder for the buses to park
- Leave your car whilst double parked in the car park
- Push into the line of traffic instead of going to the end of the line
Disrespectful drivers are dangerous as well. Please do not compromise the safety of children because it is convenient for you.
Mother's Day
It was so lovely to see the Prep and Year 1 students show their mums how much they matter. Year 3GN were also practising their finger hearts too. Happy Mother's Day to all of our wonderful Mums and Grandmas this Sunday.

Kind regards
Vic
Thank you to our staff for their organisation to celebrate Mother's Day this year. Last year was a COVID washout, but this year - we are back! Prep classes had a lovely morning of activities and Year 1 classes enjoyed afternoon tea with their mums and grandmas.

Solid Pathways Awards
Solid Pathways is an online program STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program for indigenous senior students to help develop their creativity and problem solving skills with authentic, real world challenges.
Congratulations to Aziah, Makenzie, Imogen, Leo, Aliyah and Alycia who were presented with awards for their work in the program last term.

Persuading mum and dad
This week 3/4WH wrote persuasive letters home to convince parents to make or get their favourite dinner. As you can see from some of the pictures it worked. Each day students would run into the classroom to tell us that their letter had worked. It was a great way to show students how persuasive writing can be used in the real world and help them to find the passion in their writing. Thank you to all the parents who got involved in the lesson.

Prep O scientists
Prep O are learning about living things in Science, so they have planted seeds and are going to watch them grow.

Year 6 enjoyed breakfast
Year 6 enjoyed a nourishing start to the day this week with their Woolies Breakfast. Thank you to our P&C and Woolies at Coomera East for their generosity.

Year 4 explore people of character
This term, Year 4 students are exploring 'People of Character' to answer the big question: What makes a person worth admiring?
As part of this unit of work, we will be learning about some 'well known names’, but we would love our students to learn about some of the unsung heroes in our local community.
Are you, or do you know, someone who is a real-life role model or someone who is worth admiring? Someone who doesn't receive the acknowledgement and recognition they deserve?
We would love to amplify their story. Please email Mrs Caswell if you can help.
Representative Sport
Tennis
Congratulations to Cruz who has been selected in the Under 12 Broadwater District Tennis team. What makes this even more amazing is that he is only 10 this year. This is a great achievement Cruz!
Rugby Union
Four students from Coomera Rivers - Si'u, Jett, Noah and Colten - have been selected for the second round of the Rugby Union trials. Good luck next week boys!
Soccer
Heidi and Scarlett played well at the South Coast trials this week but unfortunately weren’t selected to move through to the next round. That's the thing about sport, playing for fun, fitness and friendship beats competition every time. Great work girls.
Cross-country carnival
Despite the sun, it was a muddy track. But that didn't stop our athletes giving it their all in their District Cross-Country race. We had some of our athletes make it through to the Regional Carnival on June 1. They include Mylah, Lana, Leyla, Remmy and Amity.
Thank you to the PE team (& Ms McLean) for their continued support for our students on the sporting field and to Mr Burrows for leading the team at the carnival. Thank you also to the mums and dads who were able to come along to cheer on our young athletes.

OSHC news - Arts and Craft Creativity
Arts and crafts is a huge hit with Miss Abby bringing amazing ideas to the table. Bookmarks, notebooks and cute paper pencil cases were a crowd favourite!
We also had Braxton start a chain reaction with making snow globes! Once a bunch of children saw and watched what Braxton was doing, they all decided to join in, making all different sized snow globes and making slime. It got super messy, but the kids absolutely loved doing something different and spontaneous.
Miss Montana allowed the children access to the craft cupboard and let them do whatever they wanted, whether that be making something, colouring or drawing using all different types of equipment. All the children who did the spontaneous craft loved that they had the power to choose what they wanted to make, which gained a lot of attention from multiple other children who would then join in on the fun.
So, a massive thank you to Miss Abby for always coming up with unique and fun craft ideas for us to do, we are seeing a huge increase in craft popularity since Miss Abby has been in charge of that department.
