Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
You cannot help but be impressed with the world of opportunities that our children are offered at Coomera Rivers. Read on and you will see the academic, cultural and sporting activities that our children have enjoyed this past 5 school days, as well as some wonderful student character development. This is what we do as we aim to be Good at learning - Good at life.
NAIDOC week
Thank you to Ms Waide and Miss Conroy who travelled to Cleveland this week to set up our display for the SER NAIDOC week exhibition. The display was open to the public this week. Featured was our new artwork by Rhianne and Rachel Williams which will officially be presented to the school Monday and will be featured on our new staff shirts and future student uniforms. Our display is looking great.

We will be holding our NAIDOC ceremony next Monday with special guests and students attending.
Uniform blitz continues
Each day we check students are wearing their correct uniform. Every family who has enrolled at Coomera Rivers has spent time at an induction where the uniform requirements were explained. Every family has then completed an agreement at enrolment to show that they will meet the requirements. Please read the code to familiarise yourself with what is required. Click here for the document.
You can avoid problems simply by having your child in correct and complete school uniform or, if there is a problem, by sending your child's teacher an email or note to explain the problem.
Please note that there are restrictions to students using bright hair colours, unconventional cuts and styles. These are explained in the code.
Report cards this week
Your child's report card is being emailed to you on Thursday of next week. If you access QSchools, you will being able to access it from Wednesday morning. While academic achievement and progress is important, I want to highlight to you the importance of effort. This will be the single determining factor for your child to turn their grades at school into success in life. Their preparedness to do the work without any sense of entitlement or expectation on others is key. There is no substitute for a strong work ethic.
So when you measure academic achievement next week, make sure you give equal weighting and acknowledgement to effort.
Wear house colours on the last day of school
We have been holding out House Cup across the term. Each week we tally all of the tokens that have been collected by students for showing great character and citizenship. And while Colman is currently leading, it is far too close to call them winners at the moment. We will all find out on Friday when the winning house will be announced.
We are encouraging students, staff and parents to wear house colours or house shirts on Friday. No gold coin donation.
Kind regards
Vic
Friday afternoon saw our first debating competition for 2021 - the traditional Great Debate. The Great Debate is now in its 7th year and sees students from Year 5 & 6 compete in two debates against Pimpama State Secondary College's Year 7 students. This is the first time Year 5's have joined the competition and you wouldn't have known they were brand new to the debating genre. The aim of the debate is to prove that it doesn't matter how old you are, if your arguments are strong and well supported with credible evidence, if you deliver your arguments with a passionate confidence, you can persuade any audience. Your voice matters!
Debating exemplifies our 'Good at Learning, Good at Life' mission as it provides students with an opportunity to critically analyse contemporary issues through multiple lenses. While most children are great at arguing their point of view and what they believe to be fair in their world, debating expands on this by making them explore both sides of an argument and defend a side they may not initially agree with.
The topics and our teams this year were:
1. That the Covid-19 Vaccination should be compulsory (CRSS - Affirmative)
CRSS Team: Annabelle F, Wyatt, Angel-Rose and Fellyn
Chairperson: Maiya B
Timekeeper: Camille
2. That mobile phones should be allowed in schools (CRSS - Negative)
CRSS Team: Annabelle N, Georgina B, Antonina & Ariana T
Our students all delivered strong arguments and spoke with such confidence and conviction that saw them win both these debates. So it looks like we all need to do our bit and have the shot and those small, sneaky mobile phones need to remain out of our classrooms. Watch out Mums and Dads, these students know how to put forward a convincing argument! Congratulations to our students and all the teachers and parents who supported these young politicians.

Character in 4K
This term the Year 4 students have been exploring character, and what makes a person worth admiring. In 4K, students used hexagon thinking to create character wall display. Instilling values and an understanding of the actions of a ‘person of good character’ not only helps our children now, but benefits everyone now and in the future. Just like bees need to work together in a hive, we all need to know how to be contributing citizens.
Impressive act of kindness
When Onyx arrived to school Monday morning, as he entered the front gate, he saw me with a Year 3 student who was upset and didn’t want to go to class. Onyx stopped and said to the boy, my name’s Onyx, I’m in Year 4, come with me I’ll walk with you to class. Onyx walked with the boy and put his bike in the bike shed, talking with him the whole way, and then proceeded to walk him to class. A true act of Kindness.
Year 5 Gold Rush
This week year 5 headed out on their Eureka excursion. They participated in a unique experience, set in thick bush land, that immerses them into Australian History. The thriving tented township simulates life in New South Wales gold fields of 1854. Students participated in role plays, tent making, observation and mapping activities, bought gold mining licences and sought and exchanged Gold! The Eureka excursion isn’t a place to learn about Australia’s history, it’s a place where students can live it!
Congratulations to all students, teachers and parent volunteers. It’s not every year that we receive the following feedback from the venue:
What a wonderful group of people they had attend their venue today. The teachers and parent helpers could not have been supportive of the students and the staff at Eureka. The kids were really well behaved and if he had to rate them on their report cards, he would rate them as excellent.

Chess club takes on Gold Coast players
On Wednesday, our chess club attended the regional chess competition at St. Stephens College. Mr Ingram took 19 of keen chess players to the tournament and they played 7 games with opponents from schools across the northern Gold Coast. Students from Year 1 to Year 6 attended and represented Coomera Rivers State School with pride.
Well done to all students involved. Mr Ingram spoke with many chess coaches and teachers on the day who were very impressed with our teams this year. Mr Ingram gave a special shout out to Ashtiva and Matthew who received merit ribbons for their achievements throughout the day. Congratulations Ashtiva and Matthew!
Thank you to the families who assisted with transporting students to and from the venue. Your help with this is greatly appreciated.

Writers Workshop
This week, three of our talented writers, Telicka-Starr, Nevayah and Ariana from Year 6 attended the Jacobs Well Writers Workshop with Mrs Coz. They participated in an opportunity to enhance their writing skills with guidance from the Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre and author, Anita Bell.
Our students engaged with live animals to support their ability to develop characters in stories. As a result of this experience, their writing will be published and provided to schools.

Year 3 culmination day
This week year 3 had a culmination day to show off all their hard work in HASS this term, Children have been studying celebrations and commemorations and put this knowledge into a display for parents to view. They talked about the importance of their chosen celebration or commemoration and when, why and how it is celebrated or commemorated. Children were able to dress up and provide food or decorations to help enhance their display. It was amazing to see the effort student put into their displays.

Well done to these amazing learners this week as well.

Regional sport
Regional AFL
Congratulations to Noah who was away at Cairns recently, playing for the South Coast AFL team. South Coast played well and finished 4th in the state. Well done, Noah!
Regional AFL (Q-Schools Cup)
On Tuesday, Coomera Rivers took a boys and a girls AFL team to Ormeau Bulldogs AFL ground to compete against many other schools in the All Schools Cup AFL competition. It was a beautiful day, and then it wasn't (with storms coming across), and then it was again. We couldn't be more impressed with our 2 teams and how they carried themselves throughout the day. The effort was amazing, each team got better and better throughout the day, and everyone was smiling.
Our girls were lucky enough to win the Grand Final, which means they progress to the next level of Q-Schools Cup. Well done to Mr Cope, Mr Burrows, Craig and Dylan for their continued support through the AFL season.
Players of the Day
Girls: Kaysiyah, Remmy and Amity
Boys: Jaden, Reahn and Noah

Inter-school sport
The winter season of inter-school sport concluded on Monday. On behalf of the whole Coomera Rivers State School community, I would like to thank and acknowledge the tireless work of our teachers and coaches who give up their time to give our students these amazing opportunities. Thank-you Miss King, Mrs Walsh, Mr Burrows, Mrs Barnes, Mr Bradley, Mrs Weatherby, Miss Findlay, Callum and Campbell (from OSHC) and Mr Raffin.
Congratulations to our Students who represented our school with pride and respect. It’s enjoyable to win and experience success but we participate in things such as inter-school sport for 'fun, fitness and friendship' and that was one of our great successes this season. Another great success were all the teams enjoying victories throughout the season. Participation in inter-school sport is just one of the ways we build teamwork and resilience here at Coomera Rivers.
Special acknowledgement to two of our teams that are the Broadwater District Premiers for 2021. Congratulations to our Year 6 rugby league team for winning the Broadwater District Premiership this season. Our school is now ‘back to back to back’ Premiers in that category. Congratulations also to our Senior A Netball team coached by Miss King who dominated the competition and deservedly earned another Premiership.

School sport
Athletics trials
Our selection trials for athletics are coming this week. This is a selection trials and not the house carnival. The trials are essentially for 10 years+ students who have qualified for the finals.
Runners Club
Two of our runners created a new runners club distance record this week when they completed 21 laps in the 25 minutes. This equates to just over 5km. Scarlette and Amity have really set the bar high.
We would love to see other students and parents join us each Tuesday and Thursday morning before school. We keep a tally of the distance totals and runners will earn a wrist band at 50km and 100km.
Congratulations to Belete and Sylus on earning Runner of the Week.

Student achievements
Gymnastics
Harlan competed at his very first Men’s Artistic Gymnastics at the Maroochy Grand Prix last weekend. He earned 6th place in High Bar and Rings, 4th Place in Vault and he smashed everyone’s expectations and took home silver with a 9.35 (out of 10) for Pommel. He is very chuffed with his results.
Music and Muffins
Our first concert streamed live was an awesome success!! Short and sweet proved to be a great way to showcase the students talents to their families and we even had some overseas viewers from New Zealand watching our talented young musicians. Many thanks to everyone who was involved - not only the students who performed, but also the mums and dads and friends and loved ones who helped ‘remind’ their children of practises to be done and drove them to school early every week for rehearsals. We can’t wait to show you our amazing new songs at the end of the year!
