Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Welcome back to Term 2. This term is 10 weeks long and has 48 school days - 5 of which we have just completed. This first week back has been very busy with our cross-country, our school ANZAC Day service and the introduction of Loose Parts play.
I have been so proud and impressed with the students this week as they showed:
- tremendous leadership and courage leading the school ANZAC service
- teamwork and courage in their involvement in the cross-country carnival. It takes bravery to recognise that while you may not be the best runner and you won't win, you give your all nonetheless
- authentic creativity and enjoyment in their Loose Parts play. The laughter was contagious and watching the older students play with the Preps with absolute acceptance and care was wonderful.
I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful teamwork shown by our staff as we conducted the cross-country carnival and ANZAC Day service. The logistics behind the running of these events is very complex, and it takes a staff team to make them successful in order to iron out all of the small matters that unexpectedly crop up. And the fact that you don't notice these things happen is testament to the excellent work of this team.
I also want to thank the families who supported the events this week as well, either on site or from home or work. You complete the sense of success and add so much spirit to what we do.

Student resource scheme
Please make sure that you honour any debts that you may have with the school, by keeping up with regular repayments of the student resource scheme. Non-payment results in restrictions - something that neither the school nor your family want.
The resource scheme is the most cost-effective way to manage the costs of activities that your children are involved in at school. Involvement in the scheme makes a lot of sense and will save you a large amount of money across the year.
About 20 families have chosen to not be part of the scheme, which is quite ok although these families will need to provide the resources for their child and/or pay the invoices that will be sent to them.
I hope that everyone is able to make the most of the long weekend ahead.
Kind regards
Vic
The story behind ANZAC Day and the construction of a class wreath was a focus at school this week. And all of this culminated with the school ANZAC service.
Well done to everyone who planned, prepared and participated in the school ANZAC Day service today. It was highly respectful and the involvement of the children left me filled with pride. I was delighted with the solemn respect shown by all of the wreath layers and presenters. Well done to the Year 6 leaders who supported our youngest students. Thank you also to the staff who, due to COVID restrictions, needed their students to watch the service via a live stream to classrooms. This is always different to watching the service live and I very much appreciate their support with this today. The student live stream was slightly different to the Facebook Live which parents were able to enjoy.
Enjoy visiting the gallery of photos below.

Congratulations to the following students who have been recognised for excellence in just the first week back for the term.

Understanding diversity and tolerance
In 2D and 2W we value our diversity, and what a diverse range of students we have! Today we had Kylie (Muhammed’s mum) come in to teach us all about what Ramadan is and why Muhammed is currently fasting for thirty days. Ramadan is a Muslim holiday in which they fast to develop a sense of empathy for those who don’t have access to food and water. It is a month full of good deeds and family dinners. We were very inspired by the whole concept of developing this empathy, that we decided to create our very own, 'Good Deed Tree' and made some lanterns to decorate our classroom.
We really enjoy having visitors in 2D and 2W, just as we did when Tyne’s mum taught us sign language! If you have anything you would like to share with our class, please feel free to email me and we can organise a time for you to pop in.

Loose parts play is starting
Mrs Young believes that Thursday was her best day as a teacher - EVER!!!
On Thursday, some students headed down to Bunnings Pimpama with Mrs Young and Mr Ken to order some timber for our new mud kitchens and wood work benches. While they were at Bunnings, Sjann, the Activities Organiser gave us a tour of the store. She showed great generosity and gave each of the students a giant Bunnings hat, a pencil case and a painting apron.
The students then went and picked out some paint brushes and paint for the current Small World project that we are working on.

And later in the day, our wonderful Assistant Teachers had a personal play session in our new Loose Parts zone with around 150 very lucky students. Mr Barnes and Mr Anthony had just cut the grass on the hill and this created perfect conditions for sliding down the hill on a flattened cardboard box.

School cross-country was run and won
On behalf of the school sports teachers, thank you so much to all the students, staff, parents and supporters who helped with the success our cross-country event on Wednesday. Everyone's colours, attitudes, efforts and cheers made the day run smoothly. A special mention of thanks to the groundsmen and Heads of House who helped with set-up and the pacing for our racers. It was a huge day for them. From this event, we were also able to select our District cross-country team, who will compete at the district carnival on the May 6.

Pimpama Panthers make a winning start
We are very excited to see the start to the inaugural season for the Pimpama Panthers U12 soccer team. They scored a 5-1 win in their very first game playing together! A close look at the team photo shows Coomera Rivers is strongly represented - and many credit the talents and inspiration of our very own Mr Burrows for this. Well done Panthers!
Our Environmental Warriors need your help to...
April vacation care was a great success, having our biggest numbers ever! Each day was jam packed with activities and experiences for the children (and staff) to engage with and enjoy. We got out and about on four excursions, heading to the movies to see Tom and Jerry and visiting some of our other OSHC friends at Camp Hill and exploring their amazing loose parts playground in the first week. In the second week we went to the Brisbane Museum and got to have a look and play in the SparkLab exhibit, and finished off vacation care with rock climbing and mini golf at Game Over.
We had two wonderful incursions run by Bubble'licious Creations and Ocean Life Education. The Bubble'licious incursion was a huge hit with the kids, as they got to watch a spectacular bubble show and then have a turn at doing their own bubble tricks. Our Ocean Life incursion was very educational, learning so much about sea animals and in particular, sharks. The children were able to touch and feel sea cucumbers, starfish, sea urchins, and even a turtle!
Our Loose Parts area was officially opened over the holidays and our children got to test it out. It was wonderful to see the children working collaboratively with each other to create structures, cubbies, swings, etc. After our Camp Hill OSHC excursion the children took away lots of ideas, tips and tricks on what to do with our loose parts. This area has been a great tool to get children excited about playing outdoors and taking risks!
Our educators put lots of hard work into their themed days to ensure the children were provided with an interesting, entertaining vacation care! Planning for Winter Vacation Care has already begun and can't wait to see what the educators come up with for it. We look forward to what Term 2 brings us. From all of the OSHC team, we thank you for your continious support throughout not only Vacation Care, but throughout the entire year!
