Dear mums, dads, carers and colleagues
Our class numbers have been balanced and our class structure has been reset this week. We can now accelerate into the 2024 school year and all that is ahead. Thank you to staff and families for their support for the restructure of our classes - your positivity is very much appreciated. The changes went very smoothly and our classes are now ready to face the year ahead.
Please make sure that you update your Schools24 details following the class changes.
We are here for learning
As I outlined in Newsletter 1, our school purpose is clear - We are here for learning. We are constantly driven to create opportunities for students to be Good at learning - Good at life. To achieve this, we have particular focuses each year. This year's focuses are:
- Educational achievement in English: Improve and monitor student learning outcomes, particularly in reading.
- Engagement and well-being: Sharpen our focus on student behaviour, well-being and general competencies.
- Culture and inclusion: Improve our capacity to provide successful inclusive practices for all students.
Chess Club
Chess Club began this Wednesday afternoon (7 February) and will continue each week. Club members meet in the staffroom immediately after school from 2:30pm - 3:30pm. Chess Club is open to all students (Prep to Year 6) and involves learning about chess, undertaking coaching from an accredited coach and participating in various inter-school and club tournaments across the year. Teachers join me in helping with this program. It really is enjoyable and the strategy and skills the children learn are impressive.
There is a small cost for the activity. Please email your questions or nominations to Mrs McMurtrie on mmcmu43@eq.edu.au. There is a maximum space for 40 players and these spaces will fill quickly. In fact there are just 9 places remaining.
Whooping cough alert
Have a lovely weekend and keep healthy

Celebrating Prep
What an exciting adventure starting prep! There has been so much to learn in the first few weeks, from simple things like where we can play at break times, to meeting Fred the Frog and being introduced to our first phonics lessons. The teachers have had a wonderful time getting to know all our prep students and showing them how much fun learning can be.

Celebrating Year 1
Year 1 students have enjoyed exploring and getting to know their new classrooms, play areas - and making new friends too. The teachers have been helping students settle back into class after break time with some relaxing mindfulness time, and shake their sillys out with fun movement breaks. They are getting into the swing of moving between classes and groups for their Read Write Inc phonics and reading lessons and showing off their counting skills.

Celebrating Year 2
The first few weeks of school are always a whirlwind of new friends, big feelings, hot days, bursting pencil cases, learning expectations and fun activities. The start of Year 2, 2024 did not disappoint! We’ve spent some quality time getting to know each other, and learning how to work effectively as a team of Cogs. Some classes visited Miss Lander’s Book Café to get a taste of some new books and genres, and we visited the iCentre to see the mysterious chest and creature that arrived at Coomera Rivers. According to students’ writing there are pirates, dragons, hydras, dinosaurs and monsters loose at our school! We’ve now started our writing units on recounts, and the first of many exciting experiences that will be the basis of our writing. 2B were certainly shocked to find their classroom transformed into a lava filled volcano zone. Watch your step!
From Mrs Hadfield
Our digidesign classes really promote the concept of design - create - share very well. It is so pleasing to see the creative approaches and the purposeful design that students generate. Have a look at the images captured across the past few weeks.

Broadwater Sport
Congratulations to Shayla, Nia, Nylah, Harlow, Kyla, Hayden & Honor. They will be trialling for the Broadwater netball team next week.
This week we have our basketball trials and swimming nominations due. Please remember that students trialling for a Broadwater team should be playing that sport at a high level already.
OzTag State Cup
Congratulations to all the Coomera Rivers students who participated in the OzTag Junior State Cup last weekend on the Sunny Coast. Shayla, Nia and Zara were all part of an Under 11s team that won the Grand Final - a massive achievement. Well done to Shayla who won MVP.

From Mrs Ellison
The Jungle Book
We’ve had so much interest in our Jungle Book musical for Years 4, 5 and 6! There will be an information meeting for students keen on participating where they will hear more about the musical and opt to sign up for auditions. This will be on Monday 12th Feb at 1st break in the café undercover area.
Auditions will follow in Week 5 and students will be notified of their audition time which will be during school hours. Please be aware that cast numbers are limited and all students are not able to be offered a part in the production. These auditions will be full of encouragement, fun and silliness to ease those nerves and allow students to perform without pressure. No preparation is required as all character reads and singing will be done in the groups during auditions. During their audition time is where students will nominate their order of preferred character choice or elect to be in the ensemble.
More information regarding rehearsal days, performance dates will come in Week 5 at the time of auditions. We are so excited to see our talented students bring these jungle characters to life!
Questions: Please email Alana Ellison if you’d like to chat further about any of the Performing Arts opportunities in 2024.
Servicing your bike will help keep it in pristine condition to maintain performance and ensure that you’re riding a bike that is safe. Often people have invested a lot of money in their bike and don’t worry much about servicing, but just like your car you need to service your bike regularly. Servicing your bike will increase the life of your parts and give you a much better riding experience.
99 Bikes, proud sponsors of our Term 1 River Reward program, have not only been kind enough to donate a bike that one lucky Year 4 – 6 students will win this Term, they have also put together an exclusive package of offers for our families to help with the safety and servicing of your bikes.
Please see the attached flyer for full details.
We thank 99 Bikes for the support of our school and community.
We need to fill three parent positions on the school council through re-election.
Our school council provides a valuable strategic focus for our school. It helps me, as Principal, link the department priorities to those of the school and community. It is a consultative group that meets each term and investigates our plans, considers our improvement data and achievements, and keeps our school focused on our goal. It is different to the P&C. While playing another vital role in the school and community, the P&C is more focused on consultation and forms the direct link between the school and the community.
Make-up of the school council
Our school council has three parent positions – the selection of each of each is determined through an election process.
Of the three parent positions on the School Council, THREE of those positions are up for re-election this year.
If you are interested in nominating or know someone who may like to be nominated, please read on.

Volunteers are an amazing and valued asset to Coomera Rivers. They help us in classrooms, on excursions, in the library and in Crusaders Cafe. In 2025 we need your help more than ever before.
As you may know, by law, you must complete an annual induction and registration process. This is a simple process and ensures that we meet all regulatory requirements in the way of mandatory training required by the Department of Education.
- on an excursion
- in the classroom
- in Crusaders Cafe
- at school events or
- in any other capacity within the school community
