School review this week
This week, our school received its full school review. This happens every four years. We were privileged to have four very experienced Principal's spend the week at Coomera Rivers, looking at how we operate and the great work that is happening in our classrooms. They spoke with over 330 students, parents, staff and community members in order to gain a really clear picture of our school. Their report was extremely positive and we will use the information to create our next Four Year School Plan. I will share parts of their 34 page report findings with the community when the full report arrives.
Thank you to Chris, Boyd, Lee and Anthony for their wonderful contributions to our school. I would also like to extend my gratitude to everyone who participated so positively in the review, especially our staff who were showing the very comprehensive work we do to be Good at learning - Good at life.
Kind regards
Vic

Prep and Year 1

Year 2

Year 3 and 4

Year 5 and 6

A world of wonders in Year 3
On Monday, 34WH received a visit from Valerie's mum. She came in to teach us about Chinese New Year as part of our HASS unit. It was amazing. The children had so many fantastic questions. Her mum taught us about the zodiac, Hong Kong, traditional clothing, food and dragon dancing. She even had us make Ox envelopes. Such an awesome learning experience. Mrs Hardwick and Miss Wolbers are still excited with what they have learned too.

Then on Tuesday, Harlan’s mum came in and taught us about the Swiss celebration called Fasnacht. This is a carnival that happens every year to start off the winter season and to scare off the ghosts or their dark winter using loud music, delicious food, confetti and colourful costumes. We tried a Schenkeli which is a crunchy donut type food. It was an another fantastic learning experience.

And to finish our week off we had Mr Ken come in to teach our class all about the Highland Games and Burns day. He wore his kilt and even read to us in Scottish. We learned about Nessie and haggis. It was a very special treat especially for the teachers.

6EL's 'Cyclone in a Bottle'
In this science lesson, students in Year 6EL needed to identify the similarities and differences between the formation and features of cyclones and a simulated 'cyclone in a bottle'. Our young scientists discovered the best way to make a vortex inside a bottle was to rotate the bottle in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.

YEAR 2 and 1/2 DRAMA
Just a reminder that if your child wants to bring a costume to school to wear as the character they have chosen for their drama speech, please do so next week. It can either be kept in the drama room until the assessment has finished, or can be taken home each week. Here are some pictures of some students enjoying wearing their costume in our lesson this week. Please see the email from your class teacher for more information or EMAIL MRS BLYTH.
Swimming
Congratulations to all of our swimmers who competed at the Broadwater District swimming carnival last week. Special congratulations to Cooper and Zahra for qualifying for South Coast Regional Swimming Carnival to be held on 01 March and good luck to both athletes when they represent us.
Touch football tournament
Coomera Rivers sent away 3 teams to a touch competition organised by the Girls Sport Academy at Keebra Park. Our girls played 4 games each, as well work on their skills and game play. For many of our girls this was their first game of touch, and it was great to see them giving it their best and working hard for each other. The sun was definitely shining and the heat was turned right up, but the girls didn't let that stop them.
Thank you to the parents who came to support our girls who were out there playing.
Coaches from Keebra announced the following girls as Players of the Day:
- Coomera Blue: Remmy
- Coomera Green: Alicia
- Coomera White: Scarlett

Our Kokoda Challenge team are conducting the first training session of the year at Purlingbrook Falls (very early) Saturday morning. Hopefully the weather will enable the students, teachers and parents to enjoy the hike and breath-taking views.
Pre-Service Teacher
You may notice another member of the HPE team working with our students this term. Her name is Claire Horn. Miss Horn is a fourth year student from Griffith University. She will be working with us up until the holidays.
Netball trials
Any outstanding netballers (aged between 10-12) are encouraged to trial for the Broadwater District squad. We will be conducting our school trials on Tuesday at second break on the outdoor netball courts (or hall in the event of inclement weather).
Hockey trials
Any students aged between 10-12 who are talented hockey players are encouraged to see Mr Burrows or Mr Raffin for information about the Broadwater District Hockey Trials.

Head lice are small, wingless insects that live in the hair on your head and can be challenging to eradicate. They can only survive in human hair, need to feed from the scalp several times a day and can only survive up to two days off the person's head. Though not dangerous, head lice are a common problem for children between the ages of 3 and 11 and have nothing to do with personal hygiene or cleanliness and do not carry disease.
Head lice can crawl onto your scalp when your head touches the head of someone with head lice and, although rare, they can be transferred through a hair brush or hat.
Lice eggs are called nits and are about the size of a small flake of dandruff, but cannot be easily shaken off or brushed out. Lice lay their nits on hair shafts close to the scalp and rely on the warmth of the head to hatch. Nits hatch within one to two weeks of being laid and once attached, the shell looks white or clear and stays firmly attached to the hair shaft. If lice are not treated, this process repeats itself about every 3 weeks.
The most effective way to manage head lice is to check regularly (each day), treat when required and tell the school. If you find headlice on your children, you must treat them - either using conditioner and comb or a chemical wash (and remove the dead nits and dead lice). It takes just one family to not check - treat - report for head lice to become a problem.
